In Stemwede, moorland, historic places and a variety of gardens come together. Rare animals and plants can be observed in the Oppenweher Moor; cranes also pass through in autumn. Half-timbered houses, mills and the Levern Collegiate Church offer a different perspective. You can tailor your stay to whether you mainly want to experience nature, take a walk or discover Stemwede’s cultural history.

Moorland, Gardens and Cycle Routes

The Oppenweher Moor offers the opportunity to observe rare animal and plant species. In autumn, the cranes’ migration adds a special natural spectacle. If you would like to learn more about the moor, guided excursions with a moorland expert can be arranged by appointment through the Stemwede Tourist Information Office.

The gardens also offer a variety of experiences. Rila erleben in Stemwede-Levern features a 20,000-square-metre site with international themed gardens, inviting visitors to stroll and linger. The Nature Garden with Artworks in Niedermehnen covers two hectares and serves as a garden retreat for people and animals, as well as a forum for artists. Both places combine nature with designed spaces; the Nature Garden also incorporates art.

For a bike ride, consider the Stemwede Fields and Meadows Route: this easy circular tour is 18.7 kilometres long and starts and ends at the car park at Haus des Gastes, BuchhofstraĂźe 17, 32351 Stemwede. As route details may change, check the latest information before setting off.

Levern and Stemwede’s Mill Heritage

The well-preserved collegiate village of Levern, characterised by half-timbered houses, is ideal for a stroll. A prominent landmark is the collegiate church: under one roof, the double church combines the former monastery church and the Evangelical Lutheran parish church. It is one of the oldest churches in the Diocese of Minden. During an immersive guided tour of the historic town centre, the Stiftsdamen (Ladies of the Collegiate Church) accompany visitors in historical costumes.

The Levern windmill also tells a story of the region’s craftsmanship. This gallery Dutch mill dates from 1922 and features a solid rubble-stone lower storey and a distinctive six-sided upper section clad in boards and shingles. In total, three mills of different types in Stemwede are open to visitors. On milling and baking days, visitors can sample warm mill bread and freshly baked butter cake. Here, mills are not just part of the historic townscape but also offer a culinary experience.

Another historical connection leads to the Pfarrwitwenhaus (Parson’s Widow’s House) in Levern: Henriette Davidis lived there from 1838 to 1855.

Experiences for Every Kind of Day

Pottery classes for children and adults can be booked at the Sundern Pottery, and visitors are welcome. Those interested in crafts will find a different way to experience Stemwede’s cultural offerings here than on a town walk or a visit to a mill. The Rila Feinkostwelt adds to the programme: there you can sample and buy a wide range of products, and find out more about them.

The Hollenmühle car park and motorhome stop are places to stay overnight and a starting point for activities; hikes and bike rides can begin there. If you’re looking for accommodation, this is a practical option if you’re travelling by motorhome or want to focus on hiking and cycling. For other interests, you can choose based on the experiences that appeal to you, such as nature watching, a walk through Levern or a bike ride.

The Stemweder Open Air can be a reason in its own right to visit. It has been held every August in the village of Haldem since 1976. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the date for the relevant year.

Minden-LĂĽbbecke: A Wider Perspective

The wider destination of Minden-Lübbecke also offers ideas for art and culture enthusiasts: the LandArt Route links more than 80 art and cultural sites across five sub-routes. It provides a regional framework for exploring art and culture, while Stemwede’s gardens, mills and historic places focus on the municipality itself.
