Datteln combines a distinctive waterscape with the Haard and a range of ways to enjoy the outdoors. Hiking and riverside paths, routes on the water and a museum offer different focuses. First, consider whether you mainly want to discover water, forest, outdoor activities or everyday history on your trip.

Four Canals and a Striking View

The Dortmund–Ems Canal, the Rhine–Herne Canal, the Datteln–Hamm Canal and the Wesel–Datteln Canal are all within the city limits of Datteln. A large expanse of water where the Wesel–Datteln Canal and the Dortmund–Ems Canal meet is known as the Datteln Sea. The names of the canals and this striking body of water provide clear landmarks in the landscape.

The Datteln Blue Eight combines a hike with a view of the waterscape. This permanent hiking trail is 17 kilometres long. From a bridge, you can enjoy a panorama of Datteln Harbour, the Datteln Sea and the canal junction. Beyond the lock complex, the Blue Eight leads to the Datteln Sea. The route therefore centres on both a broad vista and a named destination.

On Foot, by Bike or on the Water

Datteln has 35 kilometres of riverside paths for hiking and cycling. The canals offer 19 kilometres of routes for rowing, canoeing and stand-up paddling. This means you can shape your stay in different ways: with a riverside trip, activities on the water or a combination of both perspectives.

Mountain biking is also an option: the 42-kilometre “Haard on Tour” circular route passes through the municipal areas of Haltern, Datteln, Marl and Oer-Erkenschwick. It runs mainly along forest tracks and numerous natural singletrack trails. As trail conditions can change with the seasons, it is best to check them before your ride.

The Haard: A Landscape for Active Days

More than a quarter of the Haard lies within Datteln’s city limits. The Haard is part of the 1,040-square-kilometre Hohe Mark Nature Park and offers opportunities for hiking, Nordic walking, horse riding and cycling. The range extends from walks on foot to outings by bike or on horseback. If you want to focus your trip more on forest and outdoor activities, the Haard is a destination in its own right alongside Datteln’s waterscape.

Everyday History at the 1950s Museum

The 1950s Museum in Datteln offers a glimpse into everyday life during Germany’s post-war economic miracle. Its exhibits are fully functional and are used in everyday operation. The museum complements the nature and outdoor activity themes with a cultural perspective on a defining era in everyday life. Check current visiting options before your visit.
