Discover Marl: Sculptures, City History and Cycling Tours
Accommodation in Marl
Marl reveals itself through art in public spaces, distinctive places and different chapters of the city’s history. Guided tours explore historical features and unusual aspects of the city; the City and Local History Museum brings together subjects ranging from natural history to social history. There are also different perspectives to discover outdoors, such as along the gate.ruhr forest cycle path or the Römer-Lippe Route.
Guided Tours and Art in Public Spaces
In Marl, guided walking tours and cycling tours are offered that focus on the city’s historical features and distinctive aspects. A guided tour of the city centre includes the town hall, the Sculpture Museum and the Grimme Institute. The same tour also highlights the stone circle known as “Marl’s Stonehenge”.
Art in public spaces is a subject in its own right: Marl has a collection of 150 sculptures. Many of the works are concentrated around the town hall towers and the City Lake. The Sculpture Museum offers tours on public art. They last approximately three to four hours and are considered easy to manage. The approximate duration is a useful guide when dividing your time between a city tour, art and further exploration.
Mills and City History
The City and Local History Museum is housed in a former watermill in Volkspark. The building is a technical monument dating from the mid-17th century. The Weierbach also flows through Volkspark. The museum documents Marl’s history from the perspectives of natural history, economics, social history and local customs.
The historic mill building explores the early history of industry and crafts. It contains a fully functional watermill; the museum also includes a reconstruction of the longwall mining support system from the Auguste Victoria mine. The Scherer Villa complements these subjects with historical finds and the history of Marl.
A later chapter in architectural history is represented by the Scharoun School: Hans Scharoun built it from 1964 to 1968, and it has been a listed building since 2004. The history of the NatureFriends is also connected with Marl. A local group in Marl-HĂĽls was founded in 1926 and re-founded in 1953. Through voluntary work, the NatureFriends group in SickingmĂĽhle created a public swimming pool next to the Lippe.
Along Paths Through Marl
The gate.ruhr forest cycle path is a paved route 3.5 metres wide, shared by pedestrians and cyclists. It runs through a wooded area and connects Drewer-Nord and HĂĽls with Marl-Hamm and SickingmĂĽhle. This clearly describes the path and the districts it connects when planning an exploration on foot or by bike.
Another cycling route is the Römer-Lippe Route. It runs through the north of Marl and invites you to explore the landscapes around the city by bike. The tours, city history and cycling routes offer different focuses for planning your trip. When looking for accommodation, you can first consider whether you are primarily interested in city culture and art or outdoor exploration.
In the Wider Destination of Recklinghausen
The region’s cycling and walking routes may also be of interest when planning your trip. In the district of Recklinghausen, long-distance cycling routes are signposted and run mostly away from main roads. The district also has an equestrian trail network stretching for more than 300 kilometres; in the Haard forests, the riding trails cover more than 100 kilometres.
