Oer-Erkenschwick combines the forested Haard with hills, trails and mining history. The Ewald-Fortsetzung spoil heap is home to a viewpoint at an elevation of 130 metres. From there, you can see across Oer-Erkenschwick, Datteln and the Haard. After the climb, you can take a break there and look out over the former mine site. The forest landscape and mining history offer different highlights for your trip.

Forest Trails, Hills and Tours

The Haard is the largest continuous forest in the Hohe Mark Nature Park. Its landscape includes hills and ridges, quiet dry valleys, and narrow and wide trails. At 157 metres, Stimberg is the highest point in the Haard. When planning a day in the forest, both the trails and the ridgelines are worth considering. If you're planning a longer hike, the fifth stage of the Hohe Mark Steig and part of its sixth stage pass through the Haard.

There is also a dedicated cycling route: it follows the Haardgrenzweg, passes Stimbergpark and heads towards Katenkreuz in Datteln. There is a car park at Ahsener Straße 97 for access to Stimberg; from there, it is about 600 metres to the site. This lets you treat the forest, views and individual tour plans as distinct highlights rather than combining them into a single outing.

Mining History on Site

The Mining and History Association was founded in 2002 to preserve Oer-Erkenschwick's mining history. A guided tour of the Mining Museum begins with a historical overview of how coal formed and the technology used to extract it. Original mining equipment is on display in the underground area. Together, the exhibits link the formation of the raw material with the tools and technology used in mining.

Group tours of the Mining Museum can be booked; visitors can also explore without a guide during opening hours. Check the opening hours before your visit if you want to plan your day around it. If you're interested in the town's history, you can make a museum visit a cultural highlight alongside the trails and viewpoints.

More Ideas for Planning Your Trip

Municipal information from June 2026 lists a 25-metre swimming pool, a non-swimmer pool and a diving pool with one- and three-metre boards at maritimo Beach. Check operating conditions before travelling. The Tourist Information Office provides brochures and maps to help plan a visit to Oer-Erkenschwick.

If you want your trip to focus mainly on forest trails and stages of the Hohe Mark Steig, the Haard and Stimberg take centre stage. For a stronger cultural focus, you could plan around mining history and the museum; maritimo Beach offers another possible highlight. If your group has different interests, you can consider in advance how to fit outdoor activities, culture and a swimming pool visit into your itinerary. Choose your accommodation based on which of these experiences matter most to your stay.
