Hilchenbach: Ginsburg, Mining History and Landscape
Accommodation in Hilchenbach
Hilchenbach brings together a memorial site, mining history and a variety of trails through the landscape. Ginsburg and the Rothaarsteig are known for striking views and hiking; around MĂĽsen, historic mining sites and collections tell the story of regional work above and below ground. The half-timbered houses around the market square and cultural offerings round out the picture.
Ginsburg, Heathland and Trails
Ginsburg is a German-Dutch memorial site and a prominent point along the Rothaarsteig. The platform atop the reconstructed keep offers sweeping panoramic views. In 2018, the Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park named Ginsburg one of its gems. Here, remembrance, a hiking route and scenic views come together.
Ginsberger Heide lies in the Hilchenbach district of LĂĽtzel, between the Hohlsterzenbach and Giller nature reserves. Its well-marked network of hiking trails crosses the municipal areas of Hilchenbach, ErndtebrĂĽck and Netphen. Depending on the season, the Ginsberger Heide winter sports centre offers lifts, a downhill slope, groomed cross-country ski trails, a toboggan run, and a ski and snowboard school. Before a winter outing, check the current operating status of the seasonal facilities.
A 5.27-kilometre paved circular path runs along the Breitenbach reservoir, located between Allenbach and Dahlbruch. It is suitable for walking, cycling and inline skating. For a longer hike, consider the Hilchenbach Höhenring: This circular route of about 24 kilometres is suitable for a day hike. The Wäller Runde offers a different distance. Completed in 2024, it runs for 13 varied kilometres around Vormwald.
Mining History and Townscape
In Hilchenbach-Müsen lies the historic Altenberg mining settlement, one of the selected sights along the Eisenstraße Südwestfalen. On the excavation site of the medieval settlement, information boards explain a freely accessible circular route. As visits take place outdoors and are affected by the season, check the latest visitor information in advance. The Altenberg and Stahlberg Association also offers guided tours of the “Stahlberger Erbstollen” show mine; check the latest tour dates before your visit.
The Stahlberg Museum in Müsen displays minerals from Siegerland and the surrounding area, as well as miners’ uniforms, pit lamps and tools. The collection also includes mining tools, old engravings and mine plans, maps, and photographs from both underground and surface operations. It offers a different way to explore mining history than the walking route through the excavation site.
Wilhelmsburg also brings together history and present-day cultural use: In its current form, it was built as an administrative building in 1776. After extensive renovation, it became home to the municipal archive, public library and town museum. The town museum is located in Wilhelmsburg on the market square; admission is free. The half-timbered houses and a carillon also catch the eye in the historic market square. These sights can be viewed as a cultural and historical focus alongside the trails and mining sites.
Culture in the wider Siegen-Wittgenstein destination
The wider Siegen-Wittgenstein destination offers further cultural activities. The Südwestfälische Freilichtbühne Freudenberg stages theatre for children and adults. KulturPur, a five-day international music and theatre festival, takes place at Whitsun on the Giller in the Rothaar Mountains. These events add stage performances and a festival to the region’s cultural offerings.
