Siegen is a university city with several ways to explore its history: art, mining and walks each offer a different perspective. You can focus on museums and historical tours, or also plan routes through the park and wildlife park. This lets you shape your stay around the topics that interest you most.

Art and regional history

The Städtische Galerie Haus Seel is dedicated to the regional art scene. Its programme includes up to eleven temporary exhibitions per year. As the selection may change, check which exhibitions are currently on view before your visit. The Museum of Contemporary Art Siegen offers a different focus: it has an international outlook and opened in 2001.

The Upper Castle brings together several historical perspectives. For centuries, it was the residence of the Nassau rulers, and since 1905 it has housed the Siegerlandmuseum of Art and Regional History. The collection includes an economic history section with exhibits documenting the region’s mining and ironworking traditions. The Rubens Gallery contains nine original paintings by Peter Paul Rubens.

Exploring the city’s history on guided tours

The tour Rund ums Krönchen brings almost 900 years of Siegen’s history to life in the historic centre. One of its stops is a visit to the historic princely crypt in the Lower Castle. Dates, booking conditions and access arrangements for the crypt may change; check them before making plans.

The children’s trail A Mine at Great Heights offers a different way to explore. Children use puzzles to discover 800 years of Siegen’s history; allow about two hours for the trail. Both activities explore the city’s history but have different focuses: the tour includes the princely crypt, while the trail centres on solving puzzles.

Walks, plants and mining

A walk through the castle park reveals various aspects of Siegen’s history. Its variety of plants also makes the park a worthwhile destination at any time of year. With three circular trails, the Historic Wildlife Park offers another way to enjoy the outdoors: the routes pass old trees, the Hermelsbach stream and activity stations. As trail conditions may change, check them before setting out.

The Hainer Tunnel extends for about 720 metres beneath the Siegberg. Expert-led tours of the show mine provide insight into the history of mining. If you plan to include this, check the current dates in advance.

Getting your bearings and choosing accommodation

The city’s offerings include tourist information as well as theatre and concerts. There is also a specific route for finding your way to the Upper Town from Siegen Hbf: the walk follows Bahnhofstraße, Kölner Tor and Kölner Straße. This gives you a named starting point to use when planning your route.

When looking for accommodation in Siegen, it helps to decide which places you plan to visit first. Are you mainly interested in museums and castle history, or would you also like to make time for walks and mining? Compare the exact address of your accommodation with the routes you actually plan to take. This way, you can decide which location suits your travel plans based on your own itinerary.
