Lippborg offers a striking contrast between Renaissance history and nature: Haus Assen is a cultural highlight, while the Uentroper Wald and the Strängenbach/Wesendahlsbach protected area showcase different landscapes. There are also cycling options, from an approximately ten-kilometre nature and environmental rally to a guided tour lasting several hours. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether architecture, wildlife observation or exercise should take centre stage.

Haus Assen: Renaissance history in Lippborg

Haus Assen moated castle is a historic water castle dating back to the 14th century. The present Renaissance castle was built in 1564. Three wings of the manor house, arranged around a rectangular courtyard, date from around 1564. Haus Assen belongs to the historically significant second phase of the Weser Renaissance and is one of Westphalia’s most important aristocratic residences, as well as one of the most significant Renaissance monuments in the Hellweg region. Public tours and events are held regularly.

This gives the cultural part of a stay a specific architectural focus: the moated castle, its Renaissance character and the layout around the courtyard give Haus Assen a clearly recognisable identity. Those who would rather focus on scenery and activity alongside such historical impressions will find other options in Lippborg.

Woodland, waterways and a different focus on nature

The Uentroper Wald covers 242 hectares. This large deciduous woodland has a natural, species-rich stand of oak and hornbeam. East of the woodland, in the Lippborg district, lies the Strängenbach/Wesendahlsbach protected area. It covers 6.8 hectares and includes a natural, structurally diverse watercourse. The two areas offer different natural highlights: one is an extensive woodland, the other a protected watercourse.

A sporting alternative is the Golfclub Stahlberg im Lippetal e. V. in Lippborg, which has an 18-hole golf course. Woodland, water and golf appeal to different interests, so you do not have to limit your stay to just one type of outing.

Cycling tours and guided visits with specific timings

The “Prima Klima Route” in Lippborg is an approximately ten-kilometre nature and environmental rally. There is a task at each stop. So it is more than just a route distance: it combines cycling with short tasks along the way.

The 2026 visitor programme also lists the guided cycling tour “Nature in the Lippe floodplain around Lippborg”. It starts at the car park on Ilmerweg, covers approximately twelve kilometres and lasts 3.5 to four hours. Check the date before taking part, as the programme may change. Also listed for 2026 is a 1.5-hour spiritual guided tour of the church of Ss. Cornelius and Cyprianus. It is available by arrangement; please confirm the arrangements in advance.

Lippetal: floodplain landscapes and longer routes

The wider travel destination of Lippetal offers a broader perspective on nature and outdoor activities. The Lippe and Ahse floodplains offer floodplain landscapes and opportunities for wildlife observation. West of Lippborg, the Lippe floodplain shows how a floodplain changes: during high water, the extensive grassland areas and waterways are completely inundated. As the water level falls, still waters and damp hollows attract numerous bird species.

The routes also vary in length. The Auenland Cycle Route runs through the Lippe floodplains and the adjoining Ahse meadows to the south. It is almost 70 kilometres long, extends 37 kilometres from east to west, and connects 14 observation points and rest stops. The 295-kilometre Römer-Lippe Route also passes through Lippetal and runs from Detmold to Xanten. This means that much longer routes in the Lippetal destination complement the short rally in Lippborg.

Near Hultrop, a nine-metre-high observation tower offers sweeping views over the Ahsewiesen nature reserve between Hultrop and Wiltrop. Lippetal municipal guides offer cycling tours, walking tours and bus tours year-round. Ask in advance about current arrangements.
