Discover Rüthen: City Gates, Views and Trails
Accommodation in Rüthen
Rüthen combines visible traces of its urban history with trails through a varied landscape. The Hachtor gate, built from green sandstone, the Hexenturm tower and the Baroque town hall provide historical highlights, while the water tower adds sweeping views. The Möhnetal cycle route also passes through Rüthen, amid a landscape of riverside meadows, forests and gentle hills. The destinations below offer specific ideas without prescribing any one type of stay.
Traces of the City’s History
The Hexenturm is the only fully preserved defensive tower in Rüthen’s fortifications. Inside, a small exhibition features objects relating to the witch trials; the tower can also be visited as part of a guided city tour. As visiting arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current conditions for the tour beforehand.
The Hachtor was built around 1300 from Rüthen green sandstone and is the last of the city’s four gates to remain intact. Compared with the Hexenturm, the gate reveals another side of the historic city fortifications. Haus Buuck represents a different chapter in the town’s architectural history: it is thought to be Rüthen’s oldest residential house and a typical Hanseatic-era merchant’s house; its three-storey attic dates from 1609.
The historic town hall was built in the Baroque style between 1726 and 1730. Its preserved interiors are used for cultural purposes and civil wedding ceremonies. Schloss Körtlinghausen is rented out as a venue for celebrations and conferences. Construction is dated to around 1714, and the plans are attributed to the architect Justus von Wehmer. Schloss Körtlinghausen was built on the site of an older castle, first mentioned in 1398. If you are planning a celebration or conference there, check the current booking arrangements.
Views Beyond the Town
The water tower offers a change of perspective. It is 35 metres high, with an accessible viewing platform at a height of 29 metres. From there, views stretch towards the Haarstrang ridge, the heights of Brilon Forest and Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. These different outlooks make the viewpoint interesting for visitors who prefer to take in the landscape from above.
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
There is also a well-defined option for exploring on foot: the Erlebniswanderweg trail starts at the car park by the Hachtor. Route I, marked in blue, is rated easy and is approximately two kilometres long. This information makes it easier to plan a shorter walk. It is a good idea to check current trail conditions before setting out. For a different way to get around, the Möhnetal cycle route passes through Rüthen; along the route, riverside meadows, green forests and gentle hills shape the landscape. Hiking and cycling thus offer different ways to experience the countryside.
Kallenhardt: Nature and Activities
In the Rüthen-Kallenhardt area, the Hohler Stein cultural cave is located in a nature reserve named after the Lörmecke stream. The disc golf course in Rüthen-Kallenhardt is promoted as an outdoor activity for families and groups, with a connection to Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. Check the current access arrangements for the course before visiting. This gives cultural history and outdoor activities in Kallenhardt different points of interest.
