Ibbenbüren: Lake Aasee, Cliffs and Mining History
Accommodation in Ibbenbüren
Ibbenbüren leads from the shores of Lake Aasee to the sandstone towers of the Dörenther Cliffs and into the history of mining. A circular trail, water activities, hiking paths and historic traces offer a range of ways to explore. When planning your trip, it may help to decide first whether you would prefer to spend time by the lake, outdoors in the countryside or discovering the town’s history.
At Lake Aasee: stroll, play and enjoy the water
Lake Aasee in Ibbenbüren offers a 2.7-kilometre circular path for walking, as well as a beach club with a sandy beach. Sailing and other water sports are also available. The grounds around the lake are open year-round; temporary local restrictions may apply.
Lake Aasee also has a skate park, a dirt bike track and several children’s playgrounds. If one of these facilities is important to your plans, check its current status locally, as offerings can change. From Ibbenbüren railway station, the lake is about 1.3 kilometres away on foot; by car, take the A30 and exit at Ibbenbüren.
Hiking trails and cliffs at the Dörenther Cliffs
The Dörenther Cliffs lie south of Ibbenbüren on the edge of the Teutoburg Forest. The rock formation stretches for about four kilometres, and its sandstone towers reach heights of up to 20 metres. Numerous hiking trails run along the cliffs and into the adjoining Teutoburg Forest, with views across the southern Münsterland.
The Teutoschleife Dörenther Klippen trail starts and ends at the Dörenther Klippen car park in Ibbenbüren. Check current trail conditions before setting out. Climbing is restricted to designated areas as part of courses offered by Bergfreunde Ibbenbüren e.V. or VHS Ibbenbüren. Check course availability and the applicable climbing rules before visiting.
Cycling through Töddenland
The Töddenland Cycle Route is a 122-kilometre circular route through historic Töddenland that passes through Ibbenbüren. One section runs alongside Lake Aasee; the route also passes near the Teutoburg Forest and the Schafberg plateau. Public transport connections along the route are available at the stations of Ibbenbüren-Laggenbeck, Ibbenbüren and Ibbenbüren-Esch in Püsselbüren. Ibbenbüren is also connected to the Dortmund-Ems Canal Route and the Töddenland Cycle Route. Check the current route signage and course before setting out.
Bus services from Münster and Osnabrück, as well as regular train services from Rheine and Osnabrück, are available for travelling to Ibbenbüren. Check the timetables before your journey.
Townscape and mining history
The lively town centre is characterised by half-timbered houses and Ibbenbüren sandstone, and is a great place to stroll and shop. The town museum covers Ibbenbüren’s history, from its earliest settlement to its development into a medium-sized town, and also hosts occasional special exhibitions. A themed walking tour titled “Glück auf!” traces the town’s mining history.
Some individual buildings also highlight the town’s history: the ruins of the Heidenturm, associated with Ibbenbüren Castle, lie near Lake Aasee in Ibbenbüren. Construction of the present-day Christuskirche began in 1523. The Mining Museum documents Ibbenbüren’s mining tradition with mining machinery, tools, mine equipment, miners’ documents, mine plans, minerals and fossils. As of 16 August 2026, the museum is temporarily closed while a new concept and location are being developed.
Another activity: the summer toboggan run
The Sommerrodelbahn leisure park offers a 100-metre rail-guided toboggan run. The park also features a fairy-tale forest with twelve Grimm fairy tales, water features, structures built by dwarves and 1,500 square metres of play space. Visitors can enjoy a clearly defined ride alongside other activities centred on play and stories.
Choose based on the places you would like to visit, and consider which mode of transport suits your trip.
