Horstmar can be explored from two different perspectives: as a place with a medieval urban layout and as a destination for a cycling tour on the RadBahn MĂĽnsterland. The 39.4-kilometer former railway line cycle route runs along the former railway line from Rheine to Coesfeld and connects directly to Horstmar. This gives you a clear choice when planning your trip: spend time exploring architectural history, cycle the route, or combine the two. When looking for accommodation in Horstmar, it may help to first consider which of these interests you want to shape your stay.

An old town with a well-defined layout and distinctive buildings

The historic old town has a clearly structured medieval layout. The church and town hall stand at its center, while former fortified castlemen’s residences shape the outer sides of the square complex. Together, these elements tell of the different functions within the historic urban space: the church and town hall are at its center, while the former castlemen’s residences help define the complex’s outer form.

The Merveldter Hof is a striking example of architecture. Built in 1561 as an elaborate three-wing complex in the Dutch Renaissance style, it features “Specklagentechnik” as a distinctive architectural feature. These terms describe different aspects of the building: its multi-winged form, its named style, and a notable construction technique. This brings a specific construction feature into focus alongside the overall design.

The Schlosstor, also known as the Burgtor, is part of the history of the former town fortifications. It is the last surviving of Horstmar’s four town gates and is considered unique in Westphalia. This single gate thus represents both a specific part of the town’s history and a distinctive feature that sets Horstmar apart beyond the town itself.

Church, defensive tower, and historic traces

St. Gertrude’s Church is a Gothic hall church built in the second half of the 14th century. Its tower is over 66 meters high. Arrow slits that are still visible point to its function as a defensive tower. These features bring together two interpretations: the church as a Gothic place of worship and the tower as a defensive structure. Those interested in architecture and local history will find different features in this architectural ensemble.

The former sites are also part of Horstmar’s history. The Borchorster Hof was first mentioned in a document in 1277. The site of the former Horstmar Castle is an archaeological monument; sandstone blocks mark the former course of the wall. These two references highlight different things: the documentary mention provides an early date for the Borchorster Hof, while the sandstone blocks mark the course of a former wall.

Another focus of art history is in the village of Leer. The church of Ss. Cosmas and Damian there contains a rare medieval vault painting dating from around 1400. This expands the focus beyond the town layout, gates, and architectural styles to include an example of medieval church art.

Cultural history or the RadBahn?

Two questions can help you choose a destination as part of your own travel plans: Would you like to focus primarily on the historic old town and its buildings, or should the RadBahn Münsterland be an important part of your trip? The route connects directly to Horstmar and, at 39.4 kilometers, provides a clearly defined setting for a cycling tour. Before setting out, it is advisable to check the current route. If you would like to combine both interests, you can treat the town’s cultural history and cycling as different focal points of your trip, without giving one priority over the other.

Horstmar thus offers a choice between two specific travel interests: an old town whose medieval layout, historic manor houses, and buildings give it its distinctive character, and a cycle route along a former railway line.
