Ladbergen offers various ways to explore its local history and landscape: you can discover the town’s urban development on a walking tour, visit a historic mill, or explore routes for cycling and pilgrimage. The experiences you want to shape your stay can also be a useful guide when choosing accommodation.

Local History on a Walking Tour and with a Guided Visit

The Historical Walking Tour passes through the town centre and is about 1,000 metres long. Nine information boards at prominent locations show how Ladbergen has developed as a town. The short route offers a clearly defined introduction to the town’s history. If you are also interested in local figures, events and buildings, a guided local history walk explores these topics at stops in the town centre. Prior arrangements may be required for such a guided tour.

The Ladbergen Local History Museum, on the edge of the Lönsheide nature reserve, offers another perspective. Its exhibits span the period from prehistory to the present day. This brings together different historical perspectives: the Historical Walking Tour focuses on urban development, while the museum covers Ladbergen’s history over a much longer period.

Mill History and Remembrance of Peace

Erpenbeck Grain Mill is listed as a historic monument. It was completed in 1840 as an oil, boke and chicory mill. During a milling demonstration, the miller explains technical details and the mill’s history. This allows you to explore the historic building through both its former function and the technology and history explained during the demonstration.

Another historical landmark is the Peace Park by the town hall. It commemorates the peace treaties of Münster and Osnabrück. Together with the stops on the Historical Walking Tour and the mill, it adds a distinct focus on peace to the town’s history.

Cycling and Nature in Hölter Feld

The Brachvogel Route is a 40-kilometre route designated by the municipalities of Ladbergen and Saerbeck. It connects to the Münsterland cycling network and reaches the Hölter Feld nature reserve in Ladbergen. The protected area covers around 380 hectares.

The Brachvogel Route may appeal to cycling enthusiasts, while the Hölter Feld nature reserve is of interest to nature lovers. The Way of St James offers a different way to explore Ladbergen on foot. It runs from Lönsweg along the Mühlenbach, past the Old Water Mill and the Zur Post inn, to the Protestant church. Ladbergen also has several pilgrim stamp stations; check this information again before your trip.

Choosing Accommodation and a Focus for Your Stay

Ladbergen is close to the Ladbergen exit on the A1, a specific point of reference for your journey. Plan around the experiences that interest you, and consider the location of a particular accommodation in relation to the places you plan to visit.

In the Wider Steinfurt Destination

The wider Steinfurt destination offers further regional culture and cycling experiences. The 100 Castles Route links significant historic buildings in the district of Steinfurt. The EmsRadweg runs for around 60 kilometres through the district. Officially inaugurated in 2023, the approximately 62-kilometre Triangel is the district’s first velo route and offers fast, safe and comfortable cycling routes. The wider region therefore brings together historic buildings, a section of the EmsRadweg and a dedicated velo route for a range of interests.
