Kronenburg: Castle Ruin, Kyll Valley Views and Lake
Accommodation in Kronenburg
Kronenburg combines a castle ruin overlooking the Kyll Valley, a historic town centre and the Kronenburger See. A stay here offers a mix of architectural history, hiking trails and water activities.
Castle Ruin, Lanes and Architecture
Kronenburg Castle is now only a ruin. Its elevated location offers views across the Kyll Valley. In the historic town centre, you can stroll through narrow lanes and past medieval houses within the castle ring. This brings together valley views and a townscape that can be explored up close on a walk.
The architecture of St. John the Baptist Parish Church is also worth a look: it dates from the 15th century and has a net vault supported by a single central pillar. A net vault features a net-like pattern of ribs; in this church, it rests on just this one pillar.
Since 2011, the Dr. Axe Foundation has operated the Hasenberghof above the historic town centre. Animal welfare projects are carried out on the farm grounds, which also house an art gallery with changing exhibitions of paintings by the DĂĽsseldorf School of Painting. The Kronenburger Art Trail invites you to follow its route. So alongside medieval architecture, art and animal welfare projects are also cultural themes in Kronenburg.
Water and Nature at Kronenburger See
The 27-hectare Kronenburger See is a recreational lake for sailing, surfing and swimming. The availability of individual activities may vary by season. The sailing and water sports station offers sailing and water sports courses and training; various sailboats, SUPs and kayaks can also be rented there. Courses and rentals are seasonal and weather-dependent.
On the shore between the campsite and the forebay is a birdwatching station with a fixed observation telescope and identification boards showing the water bird species found in the area. It offers a different focus from sailing, surfing or swimming: the emphasis is on water bird species and identifying them. The lake thus offers both opportunities for activities on the water and a direct connection to birdwatching.
Cycling, Hiking and Views
There are various routes to choose from for cycling and hiking. The Kyll Cycle Route passes directly by Kronenburger See. The Eifel Springs Trail is a 68-kilometre circular hiking trail: from Kronenburg, it runs via Dahlem, Vierherrenstein, Blankenheim, Nettersheim and Schmidtheim before returning to Kronenburg. The Eifel-Blick viewpoint is on the Willibrordusweg and the local circular trail “Rund um Kronenburg”. When planning, you can therefore choose between a cycling route by the lake, a named circular hike and trails connected to the viewpoint.
