Forests, circular trails, water and historic sites give Dahlem a varied appeal as a travel destination. The municipality is located in one of the most densely forested areas of North Rhine-Westphalia. It also offers opportunities for walks, cycling and water sports, as well as insights into the history of Kronenburg and Schmidtheim. When planning your stay, it is worth comparing different ideas for day trips: Would you mainly like to explore the outdoors, include the lake, or discover cultural history?

Forests, circular trails and moorland

The municipality of Dahlem has two EifelSpuren and sixteen EifelSchleifen. All are laid out as circular trails. This gives you a wide range of routes where the starting point is also the end point. For example, the approximately 9-kilometre EifelSchleife Moorpfad leads through Wasserdell, east of Dahlem.

Wasserdell is a wetland landscape with heath moor and peat moss habitats. The Moorpfad makes this distinctive landscape the focus of the route, setting it apart from a walk through a historic town centre. If you are specifically looking for nature experiences as you plan your trip, this is a concrete option to consider.

The Eifel-Blick can also be included in your route planning: The viewpoint is accessible by bicycle via the 3-Länder-Route, the Kylltal-Radweg and the Historische Ortskernroute. It is also located on the Willibrordusweg and the “Rund um Kronenburg” circular trail.

Kronenburg Lake and active excursions

Within the municipality of Dahlem, Kronenburg Lake is a watersports and leisure centre. This adds a different dimension to your travel plans than the circular trails and moorland. If you are travelling by bicycle, there are bicycle parking spaces and an e-bike charging station near the entrance to the Kylltal cycle path. The lake is accessible by public transport via Dahlem railway station and taxi buses; check current connections for your specific journey.

Another, very different activity is available at Dahlemer Binz: It is home to a motor and glider airfield, where tandem skydives are offered with trained instructors. This means you can choose between peaceful explorations of the landscape and a particularly active experience.

Kronenburg’s historic lanes and churches

In Kronenburg, a walk through the historic town centre follows Wilhelm-Tell-Gasse to the parish church of St. John the Baptist. Houses up to 400 years old contribute to the town’s medieval character; they have been restored through private initiatives. Remains of the 13th-century fortifications are still visible in the town.

The parish church of St. John the Baptist makes its own architectural statement with its late Gothic interior. A single central pillar supports four decorated vaults. St. Brigida’s Chapel adds further historic detail: it was consecrated in 1745. The chapel’s stained-glass windows are associated with Rolf Dettmann; a later window is by Margret Kaltwasser. Together, these details reveal different aspects of the region’s architectural and artistic history.

Schmidtheim Castle: history and nature courses

In Schmidtheim, the history of Schmidtheim Castle dates back to the late 12th century. A large part of the foundations of today’s castle date from this period. The castle serves as an event venue and is accessible to guests staying in holiday accommodation. The Beissel von Gymnich family offers nature-focused seminars and courses with experts from various fields at Schmidtheim Castle. If you would like a particular course to shape your stay, check the dates when planning your trip.

Choose accommodation based on your travel plans

The Dahlem Tourist Information Centre provides information about excursions and accommodation in Kronenburg and throughout the municipality of Dahlem. First consider whether circular trails and moorland, the lake and cycling options, or historic sites and events are most important for your trip.

If you are planning a trip with several people, different preferences may guide your choice: a hike creates a different focus for the day than water sports, a walk through the historic town centre or a course.
