Sassenberg combines waterside recreation in the Feldmark with local history waiting to be discovered along paths and at historic buildings. In the recreation area, the lake and outdoor activities take centre stage; in town, walking tours lead to historic traces and religious landmarks. When planning your trip, it is therefore helpful to consider whether you would prefer to focus on waterside activities or on culture and history.

Feldmarksee: Water and outdoor activities

The Feldmark recreation area lies northeast of Sassenberg and covers 114 hectares. Feldmarksee is at its heart; the lake covers around 13 hectares, and the area also includes a bird sanctuary island. The swimming area is an EU bathing water and is regularly tested for bacteriological and physical-chemical parameters. Before planning a day of swimming, check the water quality and seasonal operating details.

At the boathouse on Feldmarksee, you can go sailing, windsurfing and pedal boating. Pedal boats are available on weekends or by arrangement. Check the hours or book in advance if you want to include this activity in your plans. Cycling, hiking, swimming and fishing are also possible at Feldmarksee. You can tailor your time by the water to the experiences that matter most to you.

If you prefer exploring on foot, the recreation area has an extensive network of paths, along with a fitness trail, adventure playground and footbath pool. The Feldmark is a destination for families, groups and individuals; larger parking areas are located at the main entrances to the recreation area. There is also a signposted accessible circular route for wheelchair users. If you rely on this route, check its current condition before travelling.

Historic paths and buildings in Sassenberg

The historic town walk is almost two kilometres long and reveals traces and remains from the time of the Prince-Bishopric of Münster. The approximately 14-kilometre Bildstock circular route is quite different in scale: it runs in and around the town centre and can be covered on foot or by bicycle. There are more than 160 wayside shrines and wayside crosses within the town limits. When comparing the routes, the historic town walk, at almost two kilometres, is considerably shorter than the approximately 14-kilometre Bildstock circular route, which can also be covered by bicycle.

Sassenberg's history is also told through its buildings. St. John the Evangelist was built in 1670 under Prince-Bishop Christoph Bernhard von Galen. Haus Schücking was built in 1754 to plans by Johann Conrad Schlaun for the bishop's chancellor, Engelbert Schücking. The house can only be viewed from the outside. In the late 17th century, Sassenberg's Tiergarten was also expanded to include a pheasantry. Together, these historic traces offer several reasons to look beyond the paths on your walk and focus on individual buildings and the town's history.

If you are looking for accommodation in Sassenberg, first decide which side of the town you want to shape your days: Feldmarksee and activities in the recreation area, or historic paths and buildings. This gives you a clear idea of what you want to discover on your trip as you start your search.
