Dernau lies in a river floodplain framed by steep vineyard slopes. Viticulture, routes through the landscape and a long history centered on wine shape the topics you can weigh up when planning your trip: should your stay focus more on wine and regional specialties, or on hiking and cultural history?

Wine Country and Regional Specialties

Spätburgunder and Frühburgunder grapes grow on the steep, rocky terraces of the Ahr. In the Ahr Valley, a mild climate, low rainfall and weathered slate soils support viticulture. These regional conditions provide a fitting backdrop for exploring wine culture in Dernau and throughout the wider Ahr Valley.

In Dernau, visits to wineries and wine tastings can be arranged by appointment. From spring through November, seasonal wine taverns serve local wines and regional specialties in an informal setting. Dagernova offers red and white wines as well as sparkling wines, including Riesling, Spätburgunder and rosé sparkling wines; its selection may change.

The history of the associations and cooperatives also gives viticulture a specific historical context: the Winzerverein and the Weinbauverein in Dernau were founded in 1873. In 1970, the two Dernau winegrowers’ cooperatives merged to form the Dernauer Winzergenossenschaft, now Dagernova Weinmanufaktur. On a broader scale, the history of viticulture in the Ahr Valley can be traced back to the year 770.

Hiking Trails and Views

The Red Wine Hiking Trail runs for about 35 kilometers from Altenahr to Bad Bodendorf, passing through Dernau and Marienthal. The AhrSteig is a certified trail about 100 kilometers long, running from the source of the Ahr to its mouth. It is known for the natural diversity, natural monuments and cultural heritage along its route; one section runs from MayschoĂź to Dernau. These lengths indicate the extent of the trails and help put the scale of each route into perspective. Check route information locally before setting out.

For views over the Ahr Valley between Rech and Ahrweiler, the Krausberg observation tower is a useful landmark. On a clear day, the view extends toward Bonn, Cologne and Cologne Cathedral. A marked access route first follows the Ahr Valley Trail, then continues along Trail A9 or Trail 18 via Habichtsblick; the climb to the tower is signposted. Check trail markers and access conditions locally.

The information about the trails and winery visits offers different points of reference for planning; consider hikes and wine tastings separately.

Historic Places in the Ahr Valley

Cultural history also offers different historical perspectives. The Augustinian convent of Marienthal, in the cadastral district of Dernau, was founded in 1136 and completely rebuilt in 1699. Part of the former government bunker between Dernau and Ahrweiler was converted into a Cold War museum, which opened to the public on March 1, 2008. Check current access arrangements before visiting.
