Orsfeld’s history is reflected in its stone details: the branch church of St. Peter combines a hall church built in 1781 with a western tower that is probably medieval. Niche crosses and roadside crosses add further points of interest. The town’s location on the B 257 and A 60 is also a useful reference point when planning your trip.

St. Peter: a tower from the medieval chapel

The Catholic branch church of St. Peter is a landmark in Orsfeld. Its tower is the oldest surviving part of the present-day church. It comes from the medieval Orsfeld chapel and is also the chapel’s only surviving remnant. The church itself is a hall church built in 1781; its western tower is probably medieval. This brings different periods together in one building: the older tower and the later church.

A special detail can be found in the northeast wall of the choir’s east end: a Late Gothic sacrament niche bearing the date 1487. This precise date gives the architectural detail its own place in the church’s history. Together with the tower and the hall church, it makes St. Peter a place where different aspects of Orsfeld’s architectural history can be seen.

Niche Crosses and Roadside Crosses in Orsfeld

The crosses in the town also differ in form and date. The niche cross in Orsfeld is undecorated and has a narrow, chamfered shaft. Its crowning cross sits directly on the niche roof, without a stem. It probably dates from the 16th or early 17th century. The old court cross by the Orsfeld water house is also a Late Gothic niche cross; it probably dates from 1415.

Another niche cross on the road to Seinsfeld stands about 150 metres south of the junction with the Kyllburg–Oberkail road. At Kyllburger Straße 2, the shaft of a roadside cross leans against a farm outbuilding; the upper part of the cross is missing. A stonemason’s mark below the inscription places the shaft in the group of Kyllburg crosses from the early 17th century. The dates therefore range from a cross probably made in 1415, through the sacrament niche of 1487, to cross forms from the 16th and early 17th centuries.
