Bärenbach brings together the Bear Route, the ruins of Naumburg and a rich local history. There are several concrete ways to plan a stay: an award-winning premium hiking trail, nature at Hachenfels, various circular routes and historical traces from the Middle Ages to modern times. The Bear Route’s stated distance and walking time help you plan the active part of your trip.

The Bear Route: hiking in the Nahe Valley

The Bear Route is a premium hiking trail certified with the German Hiking Seal. It passes through landscapes in the Nahe Valley and the foothills of the North Palatine Uplands. At approximately 13 kilometres long, with a walking time of around four to five hours, it offers a concrete framework for planning your day; local conditions can affect the walking time. The route starts and ends at a hiking car park at the entrance to Bärenbach, next to the B41.

Along the route is the Hachenfels natural monument, known for its rock formations, dry grassland flora and wide views over the Nahe Valley. Another viewpoint is the castle site at the ruins of Naumburg, which offers an observation tower and views across the surrounding region. The Bear Route leads to the ruins, a landmark of Bärenbach, and passes the village’s Protestant church, which is listed as a cultural monument.

Hiking and cycling: different tour themes

Route 7, the six-kilometre Naumburg Route, is one of the eleven circular trails in the Mittlere Nahe Nordic Walking Park. It starts and ends at the ruins of Naumburg. Compared with the approximately 13-kilometre Bear Route, it is considerably shorter. The difference in length between the two routes gives you a clear point of comparison when planning a day’s hiking.

Bärenbach is also connected to the Nahe Cycle Route and an Agenda circular route. The Nahe-Glan Heights Tour reaches the village via the Nahe Cycle Route. This means cycling routes are also available for planning your trip, without implying that all the routes follow the same course or offer the same kind of tour.

Local history between Naumburg, the spring and viticulture

From the Middle Ages until the end of the 18th century, Bärenbach’s history was closely linked to neighbouring Naumburg. Records from the 12th century mention Bärenbach and Naumburg. This historical context gives the sites a longer story that extends beyond any single point of interest.

The Schloßberg spring flows year-round as a steady trickle; check the local flow conditions on site. Until the 18th century, the spring supplied drinking water to the ruins of Naumburg and their manor wine house. Viticulture is also part of the history of the Bärenbach Valley: it was practised there from the Middle Ages into modern times.
