Kirchberg (Hunsrück): Roman history, architecture and hiking trails
Accommodation in Kirchberg
Kirchberg (Hunsrück) combines a distinctive historical profile with opportunities for active days in the holiday region. The town has held civic rights since 1259 and is also considered the oldest town in the Hunsrück. Roman history, historic buildings and an exhibition on bicycles give its culture a tangible form. Hiking and cycling options offer further ways to explore the region.
Roman traces and historic buildings
Dumnissus was a Roman road station along what is now Kirchberg’s main street; Ausonius mentioned it around 368 AD in his Mosella. A replica of a Roman milestone stands at the western edge of town, commemorating the Roman road from Bingen to Trier. Here, you can encounter both a site from Roman history and a memorial to a long-distance road connection.
The Catholic parish church of St. Michael is Kirchberg’s oldest building. Its west tower dates from the 13th century, while the nave dates from the 15th century. The nave is the lengthwise-oriented main part of a church; at St. Michael, this distinction makes it possible to identify two building sections from different periods. The 36-metre-high water tower is another of Kirchberg’s landmarks. Built in 1899, it adds a different architectural accent.
An exhibition at the Heimathaus explores the development of the bicycle, from the draisine to the modern mountain bike. This broad scope covers different stages in the history of the bicycle and complements the historic buildings with a technical perspective.
Hiking and cycling
Kirchberg is a starting point for hikes across an extensive network of trails. The Kirchberg holiday region also has seven certified premium circular trails. They range from five to 16 kilometres in length and pass through varied natural landscapes featuring streams, viewpoints and rock formations. The trail lengths give you a practical basis for planning a hike; check trail conditions before setting out.
The Kirchberg holiday region also offers cycling for trekking bikes, e-bikes, road bikes and gravel bikes. Connecting routes continue through the Hunsrück-Nahe cycling area and link up with the Moselle. You can plan hikes according to your preferred distance; for cycling, the different bike types and regional connections offer another way to shape your day.
Choose accommodation to suit your travel plans
Your planned focus can help determine your choice of accommodation: would you like to spend most of your time exploring Kirchberg’s buildings and history, or focus on hiking and cycling? Consider the location of specific accommodation options in relation to the places and routes you would like to include in your trip. This way, you can base your search on your own plans rather than looking for a supposed one-size-fits-all base.
