Discover Niederhausen
Accommodation in Niederhausen
Niederhausen brings together wine-growing history, cultural and historical discoveries, and routes for walking or cycling. The Niederhausen Wine Trail passes vineyards and old wine presses; the reservoir offers more opportunities for walks and bike rides. St. Mechthildis Protestant Church and the Schmittenstollen mine offer different ways to explore art and mining history. If you are looking for accommodation, you might first consider whether wine, activities by the water or historical discoveries are most important to your stay.
Discover art and architectural history
Guided tours are available at St. Mechthildis Protestant Church. Its tower preserves late Gothic paintings, alongside well-preserved Romanesque wall paintings and architectural features from the 12th century. Its appeal lies in the juxtaposition of different traces of art and architectural history: wall paintings, tower paintings and older building elements offer visitors specific details to discover. Those who appreciate church art and historic architecture can explore different periods through visible details here.
Wine trail and scenic views
The Niederhausen Wine Trail is a circular route of about 4.5 km. Along the way, it passes vineyards and old wine presses. Fifty information panels explain vineyard work and grape varieties. The route offers views over Niederhausen, the reservoir and the surrounding area. Vine arbors and benches provide places to enjoy the views across the valley. Check locally for any changes to access to the wine trail.
A long history of winegrowing
Winegrowing in Niederhausen was first documented in 1402. The local range of wines reflects the variety of grape varieties and soil types; Riesling accounts for 70 percent of cultivation. Twelve vineyard sites were established for Niederhausen in 1970. The history of the former Niederhausen-Schloßböckelheim State Wine Estate is also part of the winegrowing tradition: it was founded in 1902 as a Prussian model estate. This places two specific historical milestones side by side: a medieval documentary reference to winegrowing and a model estate founded later. You can taste Niederhausen wines at local wineries; whether a tasting is available depends on the individual winery.
Explore the reservoir on foot or by bike
The Niederhausen Reservoir can be explored on foot or by bike. A circular hiking trail of just under 8 km runs around the reservoir; the entire route lies within the Nahetal von Boos bis Niederhausen nature reserve. Compared with the approximately 4.5 km Niederhausen Wine Trail, this is the longer of the two circular routes. You can choose between a shorter wine-country circuit and a longer route by the water based on distance. Check trail conditions before setting out on the longer route.
Mining history underground
Another historical highlight is the Schmittenstollen, a medieval cinnabar and mercury mine. Guided underground visits reveal preserved traces of mining from the late Middle Ages and the 20th century. This activity differs from both church art and winegrowing history: rather than paintings, vineyard sites or scenery, the focus is on historic work in the mine.
