Longkamp lies on the Moselle Heights and stretches across a long plateau in the Hunsrück. More than 87 percent of Longkamp’s 1,150 hectares consist of forest, arable land and meadows. The landscape and history offer different starting points for a stay. If you are looking for accommodation in Longkamp, you can first consider whether hiking trails, cultural history or a mix of both will shape your trip.

Hiking between streams, forests and open fields

Longkamp has an extensive local hiking trail network; cycling and mountain biking are also among the leisure activities on offer. Three circular trails start in the village centre. The Mill Trail passes through Longkamp’s mill valley, following the Trabener Bach past seven historic mills. At 11.5 kilometres, it connects beech forests, open fields and views towards the Eifel. There are shaded rest areas at Kaisergarten; check their current condition before setting out. A viewpoint above the Kautenbach Valley adds to the route. Visibility can vary depending on the season and vegetation.

The Hubertus Trail offers a different landscape: it runs through fields, meadows and pastures, interrupted by short stretches of forest. Conditions on this trail vary with the seasons. The Tiefenbach Tour also offers a distinctive perspective: it follows the Tiefenbach Valley, where the stream cuts through rock between Longkamp and Bernkastel-Kues. Conditions on the tour may vary. Whether you prefer historic mills or open meadows and pastures, the local hiking trails offer different highlights to choose from.

Traces of history and living traditions

Longkamp was first mentioned in a document in 1030. Finds excavated in Furtflörchen in 1888 and 1889 are associated with accounts of Roman settlement. Fifteen burial mounds in the Bistum district are considered evidence of Roman settlement. A 16.5-centimetre statue, found around 1912 and interpreted as a Roman deity, is on display at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. Check the current exhibition if you are planning a specific museum visit.

The local history museum is housed in a former mill room and milling area, and preserves local traditions, history and customs. The Mali House presents information about Africa, particularly Mali. If you are planning a specific visit to the local history museum or the Mali House, it is advisable to check access arrangements in advance. You can rent the Backes at the Barbaramühle local history museum for baking in the stone oven; arrange its use before your trip.

The chapels also tell different parts of the village’s history. The wayside chapel at the southern entrance to the village dates from 1775 or 1776 and contains three sandstone reliefs depicting the Passion. The votive chapel outside Longkamp was built in 1892/93 in honour of Our Lady of Sorrows. In the past, it was often the destination of a May candlelight procession.

Plan your route and arrival
