Osann-Monzel combines winegrowing on the Middle Moselle with trails leading to viewpoints, through a side valley of the Moselle and into the village centers. Osann and Monzel each add their own touches, from the Baroque parish church of St. Peter to historic farmhouses. The landscape, outdoor activities and architectural history can each shape your stay in different ways.

Vineyards and the Moselle Valley from different viewpoints

Osann-Monzel has one of the largest vineyard areas on the Middle Moselle: around 220 hectares are planted with vines and cultivated by 80 full-time and part-time winegrowers. This scale gives winegrowing a defining place in the character of the village. As you take in the landscape, you encounter not just a single viewpoint but an extensive winegrowing area.

The Monzeler HĂĽttenkopf Trail begins in Osann-Monzel in a side valley of the Moselle. Millions of years ago, a loop of the Moselle flowed through this valley, so the landscape also tells the story of its geological past. Monzeler HĂĽttenkopf is 423.4 meters high and the second-highest peak in the Moselle Hills.

From the Monzel shelter on the trail to Hüttenkopf, the view takes in vineyards and the Moselle Valley. From the Hüttenkopf viewpoint, the Monzeler Kätzchen and Osanner Rosenberg vineyard sites are in view. The Monzeler Kätzchen viewpoint offers a different panorama: the trail there leads through the vineyards, and the view extends as far as Bernkastel-Kues. The two viewpoints therefore offer different perspectives—one takes in the named vineyard sites, the other offers a wide view reaching all the way to the town.

Trails with different destinations

The trails described here also offer different ways to plan your day. The Moselsteig ends a stage in Osann-Monzel and enters the village via Altrichstraße. The fifth stage of the Way of St. James also ends in Osann-Monzel. Along the Way of St. James are a large-scale wildlife conservation area and, beyond it, the Kätzchen rest area. It is worth checking current trail conditions before setting out.

The Schiffswanderweg begins in Osann and runs along Moselstraße from Monzel to Kesten. In the center of Monzel, it passes the Quereinhäuser. These historic farmhouses, also known as agricultural houses, were built mainly around 1815, during the Classicist period. The trail can therefore be seen as more than a route connecting places: the houses also bring a particular period of the village's history to life.

Churches and local history

The Catholic parish church of St. Peter in Osann was built in 1766/67 in the Baroque style. Monzel has a church dating from 1784. Both buildings are historic landmarks in the village, but their different dates of construction give each its own character. Those interested in architecture can also look out for the Quereinhäuser in the center of Monzel: their history dates mainly to around 1815.

Another memorial site is the Osann War Memorial, dedicated to the victims of the First and Second World Wars. Designed as a small, open rotunda, it stands in a green space enclosed by a low rubble-stone wall. The site also features mature trees. The memorial's design and surroundings make it a distinctive part of the village's history.

Wildlife watching and places to rest along the way

In the vineyards between Osann-Monzel and Kesten is the Osann-Monzel/Kesten Lizard Information Point. Its focus is lizards—a nature-related point of interest alongside winegrowing, scenic views and architectural history. Those interested in local wildlife will find a specific topic here, distinct from the historic sites and trail destinations.

For cyclists, the Moselhöhenradweg – Die Moselloreleytour – reaches a quiet rest area with a place to take a break on the outskirts of Monzel. This is another way to explore the area: hiking trails lead to stage destinations, viewpoints or places of local history, while this cycling route offers a place to rest. Check the current condition of the rest area before your ride.

Choose what to focus on during your stay

When looking for accommodation, let your plans for your time here guide your search: if outdoor activities and scenery are your priorities, the trails and viewpoints mentioned above are useful places to start. For a stay focused on local history, the churches, Quereinhäuser and memorial offer specific points of interest. Winegrowing, views of the Moselle Valley and wildlife watching round out the options. First decide which experiences appeal to you most, then look for accommodation to suit your plans in Osann-Monzel.
