Discover Lohnsfeld as a travel destination
Accommodation in Lohnsfeld
In the wider travel destination of the Donnersberg district, regional themes range from wooded hills and hiking trails to mining history, water-based activities and wine. The location that suits you best depends on which of these interests will shape your trip. Match your choice to the activities you plan to enjoy.
Woodland, hills and hiking trails
At 687 metres, the Donnersberg is the highest elevation in the Palatinate and a popular hiking destination. The area covers about 2,400 hectares, is almost completely forested and extends diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometres. Two circular hiking trails offer different destinations and distances: the Ludwigsturm circular trail is 6.7 kilometres long, starts at Haus Linn in Dannenfels and leads to the Ludwigsturm. The Wildenstein Castle Ruins circular trail is 7.9 kilometres long and leads to the ruins of Wildenstein Castle. This lets you factor both the distance and the destination into your plans.
The Ludwigsturm is a 26.9-metre-high stone tower with 142 steps, offering views of the North Palatinate Uplands, the Palatinate Forest, the Black Forest and the Vosges. It is currently closed for renovation work. If you are looking for a different kind of active outing, there is a mountain-bike singletrack near Sippersfeld with root sections and chunks of red sandstone. At the obstacles, you can choose between a more challenging and an easier line.
Castle ruins, Celts and mining history
Falkenstein Castle Ruins stand on a former volcanic vent and were first mentioned in a document in 1135. The ruins and their surroundings provide a backdrop for the annual Christmas market and the Falkenstein summer tours. Check the dates of these events before your trip. In Steinbach, the traditionally built Celtic village on the Donnersberg gives visitors an impression of Celtic house-building techniques. The activities include expert-guided tours and changing hands-on activities where visitors can test their creativity and skill; the Celtic village is currently temporarily closed for renovation work.
The archaeological and mining history offers further points of interest. The Celtic Ring Wall consists of the buried remains of a Celtic wall about 8.5 kilometres long. From around 130 to 60/50 BC, it enclosed a Celtic oppidum on the Donnersberg. The Weiße Grube visitor mine reveals 600 years of mining traces in an extensive network of tunnels. These include medieval mining areas and later workings excavated with explosives. The Palatinate Mining Museum in Imsbach explains the region’s ores, rocks and fossil fuels, as well as the extraction and processing of iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, gold, silver and mercury.
Water, rail and cycling at the Eiswoog
The Eiswoog lies in the Palatinate Forest-North Vosges Biosphere Reserve and is considered a natural spectacle throughout the year. Visitors can go boating, walk barefoot in the water and swim in the lake; hiking trails with a nature trail also circle the lake. A paved, accessible path passes an observation platform overlooking the water. The Eiswoog can be reached from Eisenberg by train, by bicycle through the forest or by car.
The approximately four-kilometre narrow-gauge route is another regional attraction for a ride on the Stumpfwald Railway. Passengers can board at the Eiswoog, at Bockbachtal station near Kleehof or at Ramsen West. The railway runs between Kleehof and the Eiswoog using converted former mine locomotives. If you are travelling by bike, you can make the Eiswoog a stop along the Barbarossa Cycle Route: the route crosses the Palatinate from the Rhine at Worms via Kaiserslautern to Glan-MĂĽnchweiler near Kusel.
Wine region and accommodation to suit your trip
The Zellertal offers a different focus: it is one of the northernmost wine-growing areas in the Palatinate, with opportunities to enjoy regional wines and discover wine estates. One specific destination is Weingut Bremer, located in a historic wine estate; it offers wine tastings, a restaurant and an event venue. As opening hours may change, check them before your visit.
