Börrstadt combines outdoor activities with technology and history. The local hiking trail network and garden railway offer different points of interest, while historic sites add to the picture. The wider Donnersbergkreis destination offers further landscapes and places to visit.

Outdoors and on the move in Börrstadt

Börrstadt is connected to the local hiking trail network. The waterways also differ in their locations: the Grundheckerbach flows through the settlement, while the Pfrimm runs along the eastern edge of the municipality. West of Börrstadt, the Maria-Hilf Chapel stands on Petersberg in the upper Kirchtal valley, surrounded by mixed woodland. This brings together trails in the town, a stream running through the settlement and a woodland setting to the west as distinct aspects of the local landscape.

The Börrstadt Garden Railway

The Börrstadt Garden Railway is a model railway with a scale of 1:5, which offers passenger rides. The site includes a station, a signal box, a tunnel, a bridge and a level crossing. A ride can therefore be combined with a look at the individual elements of a railway system. The locomotives were built to true-to-life designs. Anyone interested in railway technology can enjoy both a ride and specific details to observe here.

Church and historic monument

The Church of St Nicholas in Börrstadt is nearly 230 years old. Another historic site is the Hermit’s Cell at Hahnweilerhof: the monument record from April 2024 lists it as a legally protected cultural monument in Rhineland-Palatinate. The hermitage probably existed before 1468. It is about a 15-minute walk from Hahnweilerhof; conditions along the route may vary.

The Maria-Hilf Chapel lies west of Börrstadt in a different setting: on Petersberg in the upper Kirchtal valley, it is surrounded by mixed woodland. Together with the Hermit’s Cell and the Church of St Nicholas, it shows how historic sites can be connected to different local and landscape settings.

Landscape and hiking in the Donnersbergkreis

The wider Donnersbergkreis destination offers scenic hikes through varied landscapes and woodland in the Donnersberger Land. The Donnersberg is a popular hiking destination and, at 687 metres, the highest elevation in the Palatinate. Its area covers about 2,400 hectares, is almost entirely wooded and extends diagonally for up to 7.5 kilometres.

Two hiking trails differ in length and destination: the Ludwigsturm Circular Trail is 6.7 kilometres long, starts at Haus Linn in Dannenfels and leads to the Ludwigsturm. The Ruine Wildenstein trail is 7.9 kilometres long and leads to the Wildenstein ruins. The Ludwigsturm itself is currently closed for renovation work; bear this restriction in mind when planning your route.

History and culture in the Donnersbergkreis

The region’s history can also be read in its historic sites. Falkenstein Castle Ruins stand on a former volcanic vent and were first documented in 1135. Their surroundings provide the setting for the annual Christmas market and the Falkenstein summer tours. On the Donnersberg, a Celtic oppidum was enclosed by the Celtic Ring Wall: it consists of the covered remains of a Celtic wall about 8.5 kilometres long, which ran there from approximately 130 to 60/50 BC.

In Steinbach, the Celtic Village at the Donnersberg offers an impression of Celtic house-building techniques through its traditionally constructed farmstead settlement. The Celtic Village is currently temporarily closed for renovation work. Another regional topic is explored at the Weiße Grube visitor mine in Imsbach: its extensive tunnel system reveals traces of 600 years of mining, from medieval extraction areas to later workings excavated using explosives. The Palatinate Mining Museum in Imsbach explains the region’s ores, rocks and fossil fuels, as well as the extraction and processing of iron, manganese, copper, cobalt, gold, silver and mercury.

Choose the right focus
