Oberndorf in the Alsenz Valley
Accommodation in Oberndorf
In the Alsenz Valley, Oberndorf combines sweeping views across the landscape with a distinctive cultural profile. From the heights around the village, the view extends as far as the Rotenfels and the Donnersberg. Renovated historic civic houses contribute to the village’s character; the Simultaneous Church of St. Valentine adds a long architectural history to this perspective. During a stay, the landscape and architectural history can therefore be explored as separate focal points.
In the valley and on the trails
A well-developed network of country lanes around Oberndorf makes it easy to take walks through the North Palatinate landscape. The signposted Alsenz Valley Cycle Route offers another way to plan a tour: it passes through Oberndorf on the route from Rockenhausen to Alsenz. Along the route, the final climb is followed by a view into the Alsenz Valley; at the same time, the Simultaneous Church can already be seen from a distance from the cycle path. The network of country lanes focuses on walks through the landscape, while the cycle route places Oberndorf on a connection between two named places. A Kneipp barefoot path lies along the Alsenz Valley Cycle Route. Check its condition on site; route conditions can also change, so it is advisable to check current trail information before setting out.
The central village square offers a place to rest by the fountain for walkers and cyclists using the Alsenz Valley Cycle Route. A stop in the village thus complements the trails through the landscape. For planning your day, walks on the network of country lanes, rides along the Alsenz Valley route and a rest in the village square offer different focal points.
The Simultaneous Church of St. Valentine and local culture
The Simultaneous Church of St. Valentine was first documented as a fortified church in 1128. It is a late Gothic, east-facing, single-nave building made of unrendered rubble stone. The tower has a pyramidal roof and sound arcades dating from the 13th century. Inside the church is an elaborate cycle of late Gothic frescoes. The same building thus brings together details about early history, architecture and decoration. The church is open during services. Check local access arrangements before visiting, as they may vary.
Carnival is also part of the local culture: Oberndorf is known regionally for North Palatinate Carnival, associated with the Oberndorfer Carneval Club. Some events are seasonal. The Oberndorfer Aspenberg is a named wine-growing area known for good quality; current cultivation practices may change. Both topics complement the architectural history with aspects distinct from the landscape and trails.
Getting here and other hiking options
Alsenz railway station is about 2 km away and offers an option for arriving by train. Check the current timetables for your journey. When looking for accommodation, consider what you would like to focus on during your stay: walks on the network of country lanes, rides along the cycle route, architectural history or the rail connection offer different points of reference for planning.
In the wider Donnersbergkreis destination, the 6.7-kilometre circular Ludwigsturm hiking trail also runs from Haus Linn in Dannenfels to the Ludwigsturm. The Ludwigsturm itself is currently closed due to renovation work. Take this restriction into account when planning your hike.
