In Büdesheim, distinctive nature themes meet a rich history of churches and wayside crosses. Orchids and birdwatching take center stage around the village; St. Peter and Paul, the wayside shrine and other crosses tell the story of the village’s religious past.

Nature Watching Around Büdesheim

You can observe 46 orchid species in and around Büdesheim. Hengscheid is close to Büdesheim and covers about 2.3 hectares. It is home to orchid beech forest, juniper limestone grassland and dry meadow oat-grass meadows. These three habitat types give the nature theme a distinctive character: alongside the orchids, the variety of landscapes is also an interesting feature. A spring snowflake walk offers another opportunity to discover the flower in the Büdesheim area.

Birdwatching adds another distinctive element. The area is often associated with sightings of cranes and white and black storks. Grey and great egrets are regularly seen around the biological wastewater treatment plant. Sightings may vary by season. Those particularly interested in plants will find specific points of interest in the orchids and Hengscheid’s habitats; for nature watchers who prefer birds, the sightings mentioned above take center stage.

Churches and Wayside Crosses: History in the Village Landscape

The Church of St. Peter and Paul is a Neo-Gothic, asymmetrical, two-aisled hall church rebuilt in 1909. Older medieval structural elements were reused in the process. The choir dates from around 1500, and the new sacristy probably dates from 1687. A church in Büdesheim is first mentioned as early as 893 in the Prüm Urbar.

There are also numerous smaller religious landmarks: Büdesheim has 22 wayside crosses, including several pilgrim crosses. The wayside shrine is a pilgrim chapel on a hill above the village, offering a view across the Büdesheim valley. A wayside cross on the road to Oos is believed to be the oldest in the former district of Prüm; it is estimated to date from the 13th or 14th century. The Blood Cross is a protected cultural monument and a Late Gothic niche cross, dated to 1542 and 1548.

Getting Around and Choosing Accommodation

For orientation, it is useful to know that the B410 separates Büdesheim’s northern and southern districts. There is also a hiking car park on the B410 at the village exit towards Hillesheim. Check current local conditions before your visit. The B410 is considered beneficial for connections to regional centers and for easing traffic within the village.
