Habscheid reveals its distinctive character in sweeping Eifel views as well as in historic routes and remarkable architectural details. This offers different ways to plan your trip: you can explore the landscape from the Eifel-Blick viewpoint or learn about the history of individual places and cultural monuments.

Panoramic Views over Valleys and Landscapes

The “Auf dem Köpfchen” Eifel-Blick viewpoint near Habscheid offers a wide-ranging vista: from the Our Valley, the view extends across the Alfbach Valley to the Schneifel range and onwards over the Prüm Valley and Prüm Limestone Basin to the Arzfeld collective municipality. The panorama also includes villages, lakes and river valleys, as well as hedgerow landscapes, heathland and moors. A variety of landscapes are in view, from settlements and bodies of water to open areas shaped by hedgerows.

There are seven Eifel-Blick viewpoints in the Prüm region, each offering a different view to discover. If you enjoy looking at landscapes from different perspectives, the “Auf dem Köpfchen” viewpoint is a specific place to start; the other viewpoints add their own distinctive regional character.

Historic Routes and Waterways

Emischjass is a deep ravine between trees and hedges. It was shaped both by wagon traffic and by a natural stream that flows towards the Bierbach. Emischjass is also interesting for its former role: it was once a main route between Lichtenborn, Kesfeld and Habscheid, and was also known as the Roman Road or Military Road.

Another option for active visitors is the Prüm–St. Vith cycle path, which passes through the Habscheider Mühle locality. Check the signs on site if you plan to follow this cycle route. At Habscheider Mühle, the Hollbach flows into the Alfbach; the Alfbach is a right-bank tributary of the Prüm. The landscape and waterways here therefore relate to several distinct topics: both the shape of Emischjass and the confluence at the mill.

Church, Mill and Wayside Crosses

The St. Lucia parish church in Habscheid is a protected cultural heritage site. The south walls of the nave and chancel, as well as the three-sided apse, date back to no later than the 15th century. Two crosses also preserve very different forms and dates: the wayside cross at Hauptstraße 18 is a post-Baroque shaft cross dating from 1806 and is a cultural monument. At the junction of Hauptstraße and Neustraße, the torso of a Late Gothic niche cross from 1554 has been preserved as a cultural monument.

Habscheider Mühle, a protected cultural monument, lies northeast of Habscheid. The substantial complex consists of three wings and dates from the mid-19th century. The church, mill and crosses offer different ways to explore architectural styles and traces of the past, rather than limiting the local history to a single building.

A religious tradition is also part of the village’s history: a report from 2016 describes the local community’s annual procession to the Donatus Cross on the first Sunday in August, where prayers are said for protection from severe weather. If you would like to include the date in your travel plans, check in advance whether the event is taking place this year.

More Cultural Attractions in the Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm District

Other destinations in the wider Eifelkreis Bitburg-Prüm travel region offer their own thematic highlights. The Mühlenberger Stollen Bleialf visitor mine has a mining trail with numerous information boards about the area’s mining history. One-hour guided tours explore ore mining in Bleialf, from geology to applied technology; check the latest seasonal information before making specific plans. At the Devonium in Waxweiler, complex topics in palaeontology and the science of fossil life are presented in an engaging, playful way.

The Westwall Museum is housed across three accessible floors of a bunker. Its underground corridors and rooms contain a military history exhibition. The approximately 700-year-old Rittersdorf moated castle offers a different perspective on historic domestic culture: it has remained almost unchanged since it was built and gives an impressive picture of late medieval and Renaissance-era domestic culture. The castle also has a privately run restaurant serving refined regional cuisine. Check whether the restaurant is currently open before planning a visit.
