Jucken combines a circular trail through stream landscapes with architectural and customs history. Nature Park South Eifel Hiking Trail No. 14 starts and ends in the village; meanwhile, the church, historic properties and local festivals tell different stories about the village. This lets you plan your stay around your preferred focus: spending time outdoors along streams and viewpoints, or paying closer attention to the village’s history and traditions.

Circular Trail Between Streams and Panoramic Views

Nature Park South Eifel Hiking Trail No. 14 is a circular trail that starts and finishes in Jucken. It follows the Judesbach, the Irsen and the Wurmichtbach. A section across a ridge opens up panoramic views over the Islek. Other highlights of the route include the Irsental valley, viewpoints and far-reaching vistas. The streams and expansive views offer contrasting impressions of the landscape.

GPX and PDF downloads for the trail are available to help you plan. Parking for the hiking trail is on Hauptstraße/Im Eck, next to the former playground. VRT Trier provides information about bus connections to Jucken, while the hiking trail information recommends travelling by car. If you plan to take the bus, check the connection that suits your travel date.

Architectural History in the Village

According to the Rhineland-Palatinate Register of Monuments, as of 24 June 2024, the Catholic branch church of St. Valentine is a hall church in a Baroque Revival style, built in 1930/31; its stained-glass windows are by H. Maier. The protected residential section of a Quereinhaus at Hauptstraße 17 dates from 1789 and is considered characteristic of the village. A listed residential building at Kapellenstraße 16 dates from the first half to the middle of the 18th century and was extended in the second half of the 19th century. The property at this address also includes a single-storey bakery with a smithy, dated to 1875.

Recorded History and Local Customs

Jucken is already mentioned as a village near Olmscheid in 1640, in records kept by the ecclesiastical tithe lords of Vianden. Local customs also involve specific activities: for the May festival, the maypole is cut, decorated and erected; people then sing beneath it. At Epiphany, children go from house to house as carol singers and write C+M+B on the doors. Since generations ago, children and parents have gathered after Carnival to symbolically burn winter.
