The Mehlinger Heide shapes Mehlingen with one of the largest heathland areas in southern Germany. Circular routes, a heathland discovery trail and longer hikes offer different experiences: explore the heath in bloom, discover themed stops along the way, or follow routes that also pass traces of cultural history. The Jewish cemetery adds an important testimony to the region’s Jewish history to these natural attractions.

Heathland in Bloom and Trails Through the Landscape

The core heathland area of the Mehlinger Heide covers about 150 hectares. It usually begins to bloom in late July, reaches its peak in August and gradually fades in September. The exact timing can vary from year to year. If you would particularly like to plan your trip around the bloom, this seasonal pattern is a useful guide.

A circular hiking trail through the heath is about 3.5 kilometres long. The Heathland Discovery Trail is shorter, at around 1.5 kilometres, and features information boards and themed stops. It passes a green classroom, a scent-learning area and an insect hotel. You can choose between a longer loop through the heathland and a shorter trail with several themed stopping points. The Mehlinger Heide is also connected to the Palatinate Forest hiking network.

Longer Hikes and Different Time Budgets

The Hochfels Trail is 12 kilometres long, with 250 metres of elevation gain and an indicated walking time of about 3 hours and 45 minutes. It starts at the Mehlinger Heide car park. The route runs mainly through woodland and leads to several stone settings believed to date from the Bronze or Stone Age, the Meisenberg Stone Avenue, various menhirs and the Hochfels. Along the way, it also passes old paved paths. The trail therefore combines woodland sections with several distinctive traces of cultural history.

The Sonnwend Trail offers a shorter comparison: it is 9 kilometres long, has 70 metres of elevation gain and an indicated walking time of about 2 hours and 45 minutes. Its starting point is listed as the Mehlingen sports centre. Compared with the Hochfels Trail, it is shorter, has less elevation gain and has a shorter indicated walking time. These figures can help you distinguish between the two hikes by distance and time required, without implying anything about their difficulty.

The Rätselhafte Zeitzeichen hiking network is another option for hikers: established in 2008, it covers a total of 60 kilometres and connects more than 50 stops. Mehlingen is part of this network. Together with the trails in the heathland, it offers different ways to explore the landscape, either on a single loop or as part of a wider hiking theme.

A Focus on Cultural History

The Jewish cemetery in Mehlingen was established around 1800 and is an important monument to the region’s Jewish history. The site covers about 1,700 square metres. A total of 194 gravestones still stand there, most of them dating from the 19th century. The cemetery is a registered cultural monument, forms part of a monument zone in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate and is under special protection.

Choose Mehlingen as Your Accommodation Destination

The different trail lengths and indicated walking times provide a practical basis for choosing suitable outings for your itinerary. Mehlingen is a particularly good option if you would like to combine hikes through the heathland with cultural history in one destination.
