Discover Brodenbach: Trails, Kirmes and Culture
Accommodation in Brodenbach
Brodenbach can be explored in a variety of ways: hikes lead into the Brodenbach Valley or end at the Moselle promenade, while the Kirmes and the former parish church offer insights into community life. A nature-oriented playground and nearby viewpoints add their own highlights. Which of these aspects you would like to focus on can help determine your choice of where to stay.
Hiking trails with different starting and ending points
The Traumpfad Bergschluchtenpfad Ehrenburg begins in Brodenbach and first leads hikers into the Brodenbach Valley. The Donnerloch circular route also starts in town and runs directly through the Brodenbach Valley. For these two trails, their shared starting point and the route type described for each offer a useful basis for comparison: one begins with a path into the valley, while the other is designed as a circular route. The Ehrbachklamm route, by contrast, ends in Brodenbach at the Moselle promenade. This lets you choose between two hikes that start in town and one route that ends at the promenade.
Playground and Kirmes
The “Salzwiese Nature-Oriented Playground” is an adventure space integrated into the landscape for children of all ages. Its features include a stream, a climbing hill and a meadow for running around and playing ball games. Sand, water, stones, wood and earth provide natural play materials. The focus here is on exploring and playing outdoors—a different kind of outing from a hiking trail.
The Brodenbach Kirmes is a recurring event in town. It is considered probably the oldest village festival in the municipality of Brodenbach and is held annually in mid-May in memory of Saint John of Nepomuk, the patron saint of the old church. The festival opens with a morning social gathering featuring music and food. There is a lively atmosphere for children, followed in the afternoon by a coffee and cake buffet with homemade cakes. If you would like to plan your trip around the Kirmes, check the exact dates and programme in advance.
Local history, castle and views
The “Old Church” is the community hall in the restored former Catholic parish church of St. John of Nepomuk. The church building was constructed in 1732 and, after being deconsecrated in 1994, was converted into a community event venue for Brodenbach. The community hall today thus combines its former religious use with a venue for community events.
Nearby Brodenbach is Ehrenburg, a ruin and hilltop spur castle above the town. Its history has been eventful. Situated on a rocky spur, it overlooks the Ehrbach Valley, a side valley of the Moselle. Also nearby is Hubertushöhe: the viewpoint, with its pavilion, is on county road 72, which connects Brodenbach and Buchholz. From there, the view stretches over Brodenbach’s rooftops as far as Löf on the opposite side of the Moselle. There is a small car park at Hubertushöhe with space for about two cars.
Wine tastings and trip planning
Weingut Reinhold Bernardy offers wine tastings for up to 30 people in its wine tavern. If a wine tasting is part of your plans, check the current booking arrangements in advance.
For cyclists and hikers, combining different modes of transport may also be appealing: combined with boat and train travel, route 630 makes numerous day trips possible. The RegioRadler bus on this route runs daily from Emmelshausen to Treis-Karden from 1 April to 31 October, also serving Brodenbach and Burgen. Check seasonal operating days and current connections before your trip.
More discoveries in the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination
If you look beyond Brodenbach when choosing a destination, you can also consider the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination. Genoveva Castle there was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. Sayn Ironworks is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. At the Geyser Museum in Mendig, five exhibition areas explain how the world’s highest cold-water geyser works. These examples offer a range of interests—from castle and industrial history to volcanism.
