Neuwied invites you to combine cultural history, theatre and experiences in nature. A collection unique in the world, a former abbey used as a performance venue and paths along the Rhine reveal different sides of the city. When choosing accommodation, it is worth first considering the experiences you want to shape your trip: museum visits, a cultural programme or days outdoors.

Furniture Art, City History and Theatre

The Roentgen Museum Neuwied has a collection of Roentgen furniture and Kinzing clocks that is unique in the world. The furniture also represents a European story: Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793) and his son David Roentgen (1743–1807), the most important furniture makers of the 18th century, supplied European royal courts from Paris to Saint Petersburg with their ultra-modern luxury furniture of the time, known as “Neuwied furniture.” A visit to the museum thus leads from a remarkable collection to the far-reaching connections of this furniture art.

Another historical trace can be found at the STADTGALERIE Mennonitenkirche. It is located right by the dike, in the heart of Neuwied city centre. Its rooms are part of a former Mennonite church built in 1768. The regionally renowned Schlosstheater also brings culture together with a historic setting: it is located in an annex of Neuwied Castle and hosts regular performances by the LandesbĂĽhne Rheinland-Pfalz.

Rommersdorf Abbey: Culture in a Historic Setting

Rommersdorf Abbey is a former Premonstratensian abbey and is now a venue for theatre, concerts and readings. Events take place, among other locations, in the English Garden, the cloister and the abbey church. The different venues shape the setting for the programme; visitors interested in architecture and history can therefore plan a visit beyond a single performance.

The abbey can be visited annually from Easter to early November on Sundays between 1 and 6 p.m. Information on its history and art history, as well as tours led by knowledgeable Rommersdorf experts, is offered free of charge. Since visiting hours are seasonal and limited to Sundays, it is advisable to check the details again before travelling. This makes it easier to combine a planned visit with other cultural interests.

The Dike, the Rhine and Paths into the Countryside

There are different ways to enjoy the outdoors, too. The natural surroundings along the Rhine and in the first elevations of the Westerwald near Neuwied are suitable for hiking and cycling. Part of the Limes Cycle Route passes through the city. If you would rather explore the city and its dike, the Dike Information Centre and 22 experience stations offer guidance: they present Neuwied’s dike system as a landmark, along with the city’s many features, both large and small.

These offerings provide different highlights without needing to be combined into a single tour. Visitors can also get information about attractions, museums and exhibitions from the Neuwied Tourist Information Office. It also sells tickets for local events and provides information about city tours.

The Zoo and Planning Your Visit

Neuwied Zoo is the largest zoo in Rhineland-Palatinate. Its offerings include children’s birthday parties, evening tours, animal photography workshops and programmes for school classes. The formats differ considerably: alongside an event for a birthday group, there are guided evening visits and themed activities focused on animal photography. If you would like to plan a particular activity, check the relevant dates in advance.

Neuwied offers various ways to shape a stay around culture, outdoor activities or a visit to the zoo. For MONREPOS, be sure to consider your journey carefully: the archaeological research centre and museum on human behavioural evolution cannot be reached directly by public transport. The nearest bus stop is “Waldesruh” in the Segendorf district; from there, a walk of several kilometres leads to MONREPOS. Check access options before setting out so you can factor this walk into your plans.
