Discover Benzweiler
Accommodation in Benzweiler
Benzweiler offers a glimpse into local history and traditions. The wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck destination also features landscapes, hiking and cultural attractions.
History and traditions in Benzweiler
A chapel in Benzweiler is documented as dating from the period between 1439 and 1707. At Hauptstraße 4 stands a historic building with a half-hipped roof and partly clad half-timbering, dating from around 1820. A half-hipped roof has shortened, sloping roof sections at the gable ends. The chapel and the building thus provide two distinct points of reference for the village’s history: the long documented period of the chapel and the early 19th-century building.
Another way to explore local culture is through the traditional Hahnen song. The custom is associated with singing together at the end of the community day. Alongside the history of the buildings and chapel, community culture and tradition are also themes to explore in Benzweiler. If you enjoy comparing historical periods, you can contrast the chapel’s documented history with the building from around 1820; if you are more interested in customs, the Hahnen song offers a distinct point of connection.
Rhein-HunsrĂĽck: Landscapes and trails
The wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination includes the Rhein-Hunsrück district, which covers large parts of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. The district’s landscape includes extensive parts of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard in the district are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized in 2002.
The Rhein-Hunsrück district offers numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometers over 27 stages. Another striking feature of the region is the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg: it is 360 meters long and 100 meters high. Several circular trails around the bridge range from 3 to 14 kilometers; the visitor center in Mörsdorf is both the starting point and the finish. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometers long and rated moderate. Check the current route and conditions before setting out on a specific hike.
Cycling routes also offer a way to explore the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district: extensive, well-maintained and signposted routes run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck; conditions on individual routes may change. During the 2026 season, RadBus line 629, the RadBus HunsrĂĽck-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Timetables may differ in future travel periods, so check the information for your planned season.
Culture and regional discoveries
The Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte in Kastellaun explores the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War through themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. Since April 25, 2026, it has been open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check opening times again before your trip. In Boppard, the Electoral Castle is a medieval fortification right on the banks of the Rhine. Regional food and drink highlights include local specialties and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards.
Choose the right focus for your trip
When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on Benzweiler’s local history and traditions or include other destinations in the wider Rhein-Hunsrück district. There are a range of options, including hiking trails of varying lengths, cycling routes, museum history and buildings on the Rhine. If your itinerary includes several named places, such as Kastellaun, Boppard or Mörsdorf, choose accommodation that suits the destinations you actually plan to visit.
