Discover Dickenschied
Accommodation in Dickenschied
Dickenschied brings together two clearly distinct aspects: a local history of church architecture with precise dates, and a focus on outdoor activities, culture and regional excursions. The Catholic Church of the Fourteen Holy Helpers was built between 1842 and 1844 as a Neo-Romanesque hall church. The Protestant church on Lindenschieder Straße was built between 1914 and 1916 as a rubble-stone hall church influenced by the Baroque style. Thus, two construction periods with different architectural accents stand side by side.
Church architecture history in two construction periods
Both churches share the hall church as their basic form, but Neo-Romanesque forms, Baroque influences and rubble stone create distinct accents. Another detail of the local church heritage is the wooden gallery supports with Art Nouveau ornamentation. These finely crafted details complement the larger architectural forms.
Dickenschied is also known as a Hunsrück destination for hiking, cycling, cultural visits and regional excursions. This range of options makes it possible to plan different kinds of trips: outdoor activities can be combined with culture. When comparing accommodation, first consider whether the church architecture history and local character should form the main focus of your stay, or whether you would also like to plan excursions in the wider Rhein-Hunsrück area.
Rhein-Hunsrück as the wider setting
The wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination offers a broader landscape setting. The Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large parts of the Hunsrück, which forms part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district also includes parts of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.
Culture, trails and regional experiences
In the Rhein-Hunsrück area, the House of Regional History in Kastellaun traces the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. The museum’s concept includes themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, it is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 pm to 5 pm, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check opening hours before your visit. In Boppard, the Electoral Castle is a medieval fortification located directly on the banks of the Rhine. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
The Rhein-Hunsrück district offers numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard: the full route covers 410 kilometres in 27 stages. Check the current route before setting out on a specific hike. Cyclists will also find extensive, well-maintained and signposted routes in the district, running along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. For the 2026 season, RadBus route 629, the RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel, supports trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable for the season you plan to travel.
Another destination in the Rhein-Hunsrück area is the Geierlay suspension bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg: it is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. Several circular trails ranging from 3 to 14 kilometres run around the bridge, starting and ending at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and rated as moderately difficult. These stated distances and difficulty ratings offer specific reference points for comparing hiking options across the region.
Regional specialities and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards also shape the culinary scene in the Rhein-Hunsrück area. The wider travel setting thus ranges from landscapes and hiking trails to culture and gastronomy, while Dickenschied’s own focus remains its church architecture history and its emphasis on hiking, cycling, culture and regional excursions.
