Niedert brings together a challenging circular hike and a distinctive mill history. The Oberes Baybachtal Dream Loop passes through the municipality, alternating quiet stream valleys, meadows and woodland with views towards the HunsrĂĽck and Eifel. This offers two distinct highlights for your trip: getting active in varied landscapes and discovering historic traces connected with mills.

The Oberes Baybachtal Dream Loop

The circular hike is 15.6 kilometres long, rated difficult and takes about four hours. Distance, duration and difficulty should all be taken into account when planning your day: the tour requires a substantial block of time and is classified as challenging. Check the latest route information before setting off.

On the way towards Niedert, the route follows a meadow valley and passes the Fuchsbau viewpoint. The longer circular route also includes the Eifelblick and Ackersberg viewpoints. Meadows, woodland and the viewpoints mentioned give the circular route a variety of landscapes.

The circular route follows the Baybach past seven mills. Other stops include the StriedersmĂĽhle and the pilgrimage site of HeilbrĂĽnnchen with its Wendelinus Chapel. Six modern art installations add a contemporary touch to the route. The StriedersmĂĽhle is listed as open at weekends; check current opening hours before visiting.

Mill History in Niedert

One distinctive historic landmark is the Niederter Mühle in the Niedert district. It was a former Palatinate bann mill and is documented as far back as 1630. It was renovated in the 1970s and is now privately owned. The history of this mill and the mill stops along the Baybach offer different aspects of the region’s heritage.

The Rhein-Hunsrück district includes large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. It also encompasses much of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. These landscapes shape the wider regional setting of the Rhein-Hunsrück travel destination.

The Rhein-Hunsrück district offers numerous hiking routes, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. One longer-distance option is the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig: it runs through the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers 410 kilometres in 27 stages. It’s worth checking the current route before planning a specific hike.

Cycling trips are another option in the wider destination: extensive, well-maintained and signposted cycle paths run along the Rhine and through the HunsrĂĽck. During the 2026 season, RadBus route 629 supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes Cycle Route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen, as well as on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. If you plan to use the bus for a cycling trip, check the timetable for the relevant season.
