Kastellaun combines a castle in the historic town center with forest trails, cycling routes, and experiences centered on play and water. These themes offer different options for your stay: you can explore history, plan a circular hike, or choose individual activities. The adventure playground by the lake is designed for children up to age 14.

Castle and History in Kastellaun

Kastellaun Castle stands in the historic center of the town and is first documented in the early 13th century. It was destroyed in 1689 and restored in the late 20th century. Today, the castle is used for cultural events. The ARGO app lets you view a digital reconstruction on a smartphone or tablet at the authentic site. This brings the history of the building together with a digital representation.

The House of Regional History in Kastellaun offers another perspective on the past. Themed exhibitions, information panels, and original documents present the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. From April 25, 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 p.m., as well as Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Hiking and Cycling

The 3 Täler Weg is a 13.8-kilometer circular hike that begins in the center of Kastellaun and passes through the valleys of the Trimmbach, Deimerbach, and Ourbach. Listed starting points include the parking lot at Altstadtpassage and, alternatively, Junkersmühle, which is served by bus. If you are planning the route, check access options and bus connections in advance.

The Traumschleife Burgstadt-Pfad tells a different story along the way: it follows old postal roads through the forest and leads to an outdoor classroom and a viewpoint overlooking the HunsrĂĽck heights toward the Soonwald. The Kyrill-Pfad, by contrast, focuses on forest regeneration. It passes through a 1.5-hectare area of spruce forest in the municipal woodland that was damaged by the storm, illustrating how the forest regenerates. The trail is freely accessible year-round, except in icy or snowy conditions.

Two different cycling routes also pass through Kastellaun or continue from here. The 38-kilometer Schinderhannes-Radweg follows a former railway line between Emmelshausen and Simmern, passing through Kastellaun; its route runs away from busy roads. The HunsrĂĽck-Mosel-Radweg leads from Kastellaun toward Treis-Karden and the Moselle. If you choose your accommodation based on your planned rides, these different routes provide a useful starting point for further planning.

Play, Water, and Summer Impressions

The adventure playground by the lake features a slide tower, a play castle, a zip line, sand play equipment, a water pump, and swings. At AQUA fit Kastellaun, the water area covers 250 square meters; there is also a one-meter diving board and a three-meter diving platform. The area and the two diving heights give you specific points of reference when planning different water experiences.

The forest adventure park has an adventure course with climbing and balancing obstacles. The barefoot trail there is 1.2 kilometers long and crosses 20 different surfaces. In summer, the lavender maze next to the cemetery parking lot offers peaceful strolls. The intensity of the lavender bloom can vary.

The Rhine-HunsrĂĽck Region as a Broader Landscape

The landscape of the Rhine-Hunsrück district includes extensive areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The Hunsrück plateau is joined to the south by quartzite ridges such as the Soonwald; in the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary. The district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. Check the route and certification when planning a specific hike.

The Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig runs across the HunsrĂĽck through Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard. This long-distance hiking trail covers 410 kilometers in 27 stages. It is therefore very different from the 13.8-kilometer circular hike through the three valleys: the total distance and number of stages offer an initial guide when choosing between a single circular hike and a multi-day trail.

Another regional attraction is the Geierlay Suspension Bridge between Mörsdorf and Sosberg. It is 360 meters long and 100 meters high. Several circular trails between 3 and 14 kilometers run around the bridge, starting and ending at the visitor center in Mörsdorf. The Traumschleife Geierlay is 6.6 kilometers long and rated moderate. When planning your route, you can weigh the different trail lengths against the stated difficulty level.
