Discover Gondershausen
Accommodation in Gondershausen
Experience Gondershausen on two different tours: a premium hike starts in the village, while a cycling route passes through it. The 16.6-kilometre Rabenlay Premium Hiking Trail starts at Gunthershalle. Open views across fields, the Baybach Gorge and a forest lake are part of the route. The longer hike alternates between expansive views, the gorge and the forest lake. Certifications for the trail are listed through 2024; its hiking seal is valid until June 2027.
Hiking or cycling
The Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route is a separate option for cyclists. Rated easy, the route is 22.05 kilometres long, runs from Emmelshausen to Burgen and passes through Gondershausen. It offers views across the Hunsrück towards the volcanic peaks of the Eifel. To choose between the tours, consider their different experiences: the Rabenlay alternates between views across fields, the Baybach Gorge and the forest lake; the cycle route is defined by its connection from Emmelshausen to Burgen and views towards the Eifel.
For the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Route, cyclists can take the Hunsrückbahn from Boppard to Emmelshausen and then continue by bike towards Gondershausen. If you would like to combine train travel and cycling, check the Hunsrückbahn timetable before your tour.
Within the wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination
The wider destination of Rhein-Hunsrück extends beyond Gondershausen. The Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left-bank section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Its landscape also includes large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.
Beyond Rabenlay, the Rhein-Hunsrück district also has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig Premium Hiking Trail. Another longer hiking option is the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig: it runs across the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometres in 27 stages. These routes complement the local hike with other distances and route profiles within the wider destination.
Culture and regional themes
Cultural attractions also give the wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination its own character. The Electoral Castle in Boppard is a medieval fortification right on the banks of the Rhine. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhein-Hunsrück district are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognized in 2002.
In Kastellaun, the Haus der regionalen Geschichte Museum traces the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Its displays include themed exhibitions, text panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours before your visit.
Culinary highlights in the wider Rhein-Hunsrück destination include regional specialties and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards.
Choose the right base
If you are planning a hike on Rabenlay, consider Gondershausen as a place to search. If you are mainly planning the cycle route, take its course from Emmelshausen to Burgen and through Gondershausen into account. First decide which tour you want to shape your stay around, then look for accommodation near your preferred starting point.
