Lautzenhausen is situated on a high plateau in the Hunsrück, immediately next to Hahn Airport. Hahn Airport lists Lautzenhausen as a navigation destination in its directions; the municipality is 100 metres from the airport. If the airport is relevant to your travel plans, check the access information again before setting off, as transport arrangements may change.

A Hunsrück village with its own history

The construction of Hahn Airport in the 1950s had a significant impact on Lautzenhausen. Previously, the village was shaped by agriculture; it is still considered a Hunsrück village. The Hunsrück is part of the Rhenish Massif. The regional valleys of the Moselle, Rhine and Nahe surround Lautzenhausen and form the wider landscape setting for its high-plateau location.

The wider Rhine-Hunsrück destination

The eponymous district within the wider Rhine-Hunsrück destination covers large parts of the Hunsrück, including sections of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. The area also includes the section of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine; in the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine forms the district’s eastern boundary.

The Rhine-Hunsrück district has numerous hiking trails, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig crosses the Hunsrück via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometres over 27 stages. At the shorter end of the scale are the circular trails around the Geierlay Bridge: they are between 3 and 14 kilometres long and start and finish at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The suspension bridge itself lies between Mörsdorf and Sosberg, is 360 metres long and 100 metres high. The Geierlay dream loop is 6.6 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. This makes it possible to distinguish a multi-day stage route from shorter circular trails by their distances. Check the conditions of the individual trails before planning a specific hike.

The wider destination also offers guidance for cycling tours: the Rhine-Hunsrück district has extensive, well-developed and signposted cycle paths along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. RadBus route 629, the RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel, supports tours on the Schinderhannes cycle path between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen and on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle path between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. The RadBus information applies to the 2026 season; check the timetable for your travel dates.

For culture and history, Kastellaun is home to the House of Regional History: themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents present the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. In Boppard, the Electoral Castle is a medieval fortification directly on the banks of the Rhine. Parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein municipal association and the town of Boppard in the Rhine-Hunsrück district are part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognised in 2002. Culinary highlights of the Rhine-Hunsrück include regional specialities and Middle Rhine wine from high-quality vineyards.
