Oberwesel brings together the Rhine landscape and stories of churches, wine and town life. A special organ, museums with historical exhibitions and paths leading to viewpoints give your stay different focuses: you can explore culture or take in the views of rock formations, vineyards and the Rhine.

Rhine Landscape and Rock Formations

Oberwesel is located in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site and marks a change in the landscape: here, soft clay slate gives way to hard sandstone. The Upper Middle Rhine Valley is also shaped by historic small towns, terraced vineyards and castle ruins on the heights. In the wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck destination, the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district encompasses large areas of the HunsrĂĽck, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the part of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine.

Trails with Views, Wine and History

The Schwede-Bure Tour starts at Schaarplatz and follows the medieval town wall to St. Martin's Church. Kackstuhl and Landsknechtsblick offer different views of the Rhine along the way: from Kackstuhl, you can see the Rhine, while Landsknechtsblick offers views of Oberwesel and the Rhine. The tour also passes the Kalvarienberg Chapel, built in 1845, which was once a destination for processions.

The quarry offers a different view of the landscape: there you can see layers of slate estimated to be 300 to 400 million years old. At the Goldemund vineyard, visitors can learn more about Oberwesel wine. On the same tour, viewpoints, rock formations, religious history and wine country offer distinct experiences side by side.

Museums and Music in Oberwesel

The Oberwesel Town Museum is housed in restored rooms of a former winery and, across four floors, conveys what life along the Rhine was like. Its exhibitions include a virtual journey along the Rhine and an interactive underwater world showcasing the river's biodiversity. A model railway layout depicts Oberwesel as it was around the 1950s. The historic rooms, digital experiences and town model thus shed light on different aspects of life by the river.

The Church of Our Lady also offers a special connection to the town's history: its Eberhardt/Klais organ is considered the largest organ on the Middle Rhine. It has 54 stops, 3,621 pipes and an original Baroque case. You can hear it at concerts and matinees, or during private organ tours. If you have a particular date in mind, it's worth checking the relevant program.

At the Tower Museum, visitors can climb the gate tower of Schönburg Castle and look out over the Rhine Valley. The tower's rooms tell more than 700 years of history. This view from above complements the town's exhibitions and historic interiors with a perspective on the valley.

The Wine Witch and Art in the Town

The Wine Witch is a cultural figure in Oberwesel, similar to a wine queen, and is crowned each year during the Walpurgis Night celebration. The Oberwesel Cultural Center displays historical information, former costumes and goblets associated with the Wine Witch tradition. If you're planning a trip around Walpurgis Night, it's a good idea to check the specific event dates in advance.

Art and architecture also come together here: the Oberwesel Sculpture Park brings modern art into dialogue with historic architecture. Individual artworks extend from the Rhine riverfront through the vineyards toward the heights near Urbar. The Oelsberg Art Trail is a project by the town of Oberwesel, the local association of young winegrowers, and artists Michael Apitz and Volker Boch.

When choosing your accommodation, you could start by considering what you want your stay to focus on: museum visits and organ music, trails with views and wine country, or the Wine Witch tradition.
