Wahlenau is a destination for days when you want to explore on foot or by bike. The Traumschleife Via molarum runs directly through the town; there is also an 8.8-kilometre circular route featuring a stream, a forest boundary path and viewpoints. Cyclists will also find clear directions: Wahlenau lies on the HunsrĂĽck Cycle Route and is the starting and finishing point for eleven described trekking bike loops. This allows you to plan your stay around different types of routes.

The Via molarum and its historical themes

The Traumschleife Via molarum runs directly through Wahlenau and connects with the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig and the Kappleifelsen Tour in Laufersweiler. This difficult circular hike is 15.56 kilometres long and takes about five hours and 30 minutes; both the ascent and descent are 202 metres. Along the way, the route explores the region’s milling heritage and Roman past. The distance, elevation gain and historical themes give you concrete information to help you include this hike in your day’s plans. Before setting off, check the terrain and trail markings; plan the route according to current conditions.

A shorter loop with a stream and viewpoints

The 8.8-kilometre circular route follows the Wahler Bach and an old forest boundary path, passing the Buchenplatz natural monument. It offers panoramic views towards the Hochwald and Soon and viewpoints near On de dick Eich. If you want to compare distances, you can set this loop against the 15.56-kilometre Via molarum. The routes also differ in their themes: the 8.8-kilometre loop focuses on the stream, forest boundary path and viewpoints, while the Via molarum highlights the milling heritage and Roman past. There are also some gaps in the trail markings elsewhere in the local network.

Cycling tours from Wahlenau

Wahlenau lies on the HunsrĂĽck Cycle Route and is the starting and finishing point for eleven described trekking bike loops. They range from 22 to 82 kilometres. This range helps you choose a cycling tour based on your preferred distance: the shortest and longest loops differ by 60 kilometres. This makes it possible to plan your day of cycling differently from either of the two local circular hikes. Before setting off, check the route and conditions for the loop you have chosen.

The wider Rhein-HunsrĂĽck travel destination

The broader travel destination of Rhein-Hunsrück extends beyond the landscape of individual local routes. The Rhein-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, which is part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the Upper Middle Rhine Valley on the left bank of the Rhine. The district’s landscapes include large parts of the Hunsrück plateau and the quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley area, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.

For regional hikes, the Rhein-HunsrĂĽck district has numerous trails, including the certified premium hiking trail Soonwaldsteig. Another long-distance route is the Saar-HunsrĂĽck-Steig: it crosses the HunsrĂĽck via Kastellaun to the Rhine at Boppard and covers a total of 410 kilometres in 27 stages. Individual detours may change, so check the route for the stage you choose. This makes it easy to distinguish the circular hikes described in Wahlenau from longer routes across the wider travel destination by distance and scale.

Culture is also part of the regional picture. The Haus der regionalen Geschichte Museum in Kastellaun presents the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. Themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents offer insights into these periods. From 25 April 2026, the museum is open Thursdays and Fridays from 12:00 to 17:00, and Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11:00 to 17:00. Check the opening hours before your visit.
