Sohren: Circular Routes, Churches and Railway Heritage
Accommodation in Sohren
Sohren combines circular routes through forests and open countryside with churches and traces of railway history. The hiking routes vary in length and character: some follow field paths or pass through forests, while others offer their own highlights, such as views, poems or connections to other local attractions. The town’s architectural history also offers a range of themes to consider when planning your trip.
Circular Routes and Walks Around Sohren
The Panorama Loop is an approximately 9-kilometre circular route starting at the Backesbrücke car park. It runs mostly along paved field paths through Niedersohren and back to Sohren. Along the way, views open up across Sohren and over the Hunsrück’s meadows and forests. If you prefer a shorter loop, you can take a shortcut along the way. Check local conditions before setting out.
At 16.5 kilometres, the Römer Loop is a longer option for walking around Sohren. Sections follow the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, the Ausonius Road, the Way of St James and the Sponheim Trail. Views extend towards the Soonwald, Idarkopf and Lützelsoon. The loop also connects with the Wald-Aktiv-Route, the Poetry Trail and the Kneipp facility in the Ried recreation area. Several named trails and local destinations come together on this route.
The 4.2-kilometre Poetry Trail is a circular route through the forest between the Sohren-Büchenbeuren school centre and Gretenhof. Ten seasonal picture and poetry boards were created by schoolchildren and kindergarten children from the surrounding area; benches are located along the route. Another loop, around 6 kilometres long, passes through mixed forest between Sohren, Schwarzen and Bärenbach. It starts and ends at the Birkenhöhe car park, runs mostly along paved forest and field paths, and offers benches and views of the Hunsrück landscape.
The distances of 4.2 kilometres, around 6 kilometres, approximately 9 kilometres and 16.5 kilometres make it easy to compare the different route lengths. Each also has its own features: boards and benches on the Poetry Trail, mixed forest and panoramic views on the approximately 6-kilometre loop from the Birkenhöhe car park, and connections to other trails and the Kneipp facility on the Römer Loop. Check local conditions before setting out on a hike.
Churches and Railway Heritage
The Protestant church combines a Late Gothic church tradition with an unusual octagonal tower. The oldest parts of the present building date from the 15th century. The Catholic parish church of St. Michael offers a different architectural reference point: it was built in 1906 to designs by Cologne architect Eduard Endler. Together, the two churches illustrate different periods and architectural styles that can be considered side by side when exploring the town’s history.
Sohren’s railway heritage includes the former railway station, a protected building that was later renovated for use as a restaurant, and a water tower that supplied steam locomotives. To the north of the town, a Jewish cemetery lies in a forest and was probably established around 1850. The town’s history thus ranges from railway facilities and technical infrastructure to a historic cemetery. Access arrangements may vary from one location to another.
