Woppenroth brings together two distinct themes: the film history of the first season of Edgar Reitz’s Heimat trilogy and a juniper heathland that is a cultural and historical landscape relic. Those interested in film culture will find a special connection here to the fictional village of Schabbach. The juniper heathland appeals to a different kind of curiosity: an interest in historically shaped landscapes and nature.

Heimat Film History in Woppenroth

Woppenroth was the main filming location for the first season of Edgar Reitz’s Heimat trilogy. The village served as the fictional setting of Schabbach and as an open-air studio. This closely links the film to the name Woppenroth: in the trilogy’s film history, the village represents both an actual filming location and the fictional world of the village.

A Heimat film monument in the centre of Woppenroth commemorates the filming. It stands between the church and the village fountain and incorporates a film prop. Together, the village’s role as a filming location and the monument offer two different points of interest for anyone exploring the Heimat trilogy: Schabbach’s fictional identity and the memorial in the village centre.

Juniper Heathland as a Cultural and Historical Landscape

The juniper heathland is considered a cultural and historical relic of a heath landscape. For nature enthusiasts, it is one of Woppenroth’s local attractions and complements the film-history perspective with a different way of seeing the area. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus mainly on Heimat film history, the heathland, or both.

Rhine-Hunsrück: A Broader Regional Setting

The wider Rhine-Hunsrück destination offers further landscape and cultural attractions. The Rhine-Hunsrück district encompasses large areas of the Hunsrück, part of the Rhenish Slate Mountains, as well as the left bank of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. The district’s landscape also includes much of the Hunsrück plateau and quartzite ridges to the south, such as the Soonwald. In the Middle Rhine Valley, the Rhine also forms the district’s eastern boundary.

The UNESCO designation also applies to parts of this broader region: parts of the Hunsrück-Mittelrhein collective municipality and the town of Boppard in the Rhine-Hunsrück district belong to the Upper Middle Rhine Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was recognised in 2002. Boppard is home to the Electoral Castle, a medieval fortification directly on the banks of the Rhine. These attractions offer another cultural and landscape perspective to consider when planning a trip to the Rhine-Hunsrück region.

Hiking and Cycling Tours in the District

The Rhine-Hunsrück district offers numerous hiking routes, including the certified Soonwaldsteig premium hiking trail. The Saar-Hunsrück-Steig runs through the Hunsrück, via Kastellaun, to the Rhine at Boppard. It is 410 kilometres long in total, divided into 27 stages. The different route details can help you choose the length of tour you want. Before setting out on a specific hike, check the route and its certification; conditions on individual routes may change.

There is also a wide choice of cycling routes in the district: extensive, well-developed and signposted cycle paths run along the Rhine and through the Hunsrück. During the 2026 season, RadBus route 629, the RadBus Hunsrück-Mosel, supports cycling trips on the Schinderhannes cycle route between Kastellaun and Emmelshausen and on the Schinderhannes-Untermosel cycle route between Emmelshausen and the Moselle. Check the timetable for your planned travel date, as details for future seasons may vary.

Geierlay and Regional Culture

The Geierlay suspension bridge is 360 metres long and 100 metres high; it lies between Mörsdorf and Sosberg. Several circular trails, ranging from 3 to 14 kilometres, run around the bridge, starting and ending at the visitor centre in Mörsdorf. The Geierlay Dream Loop is 6.6 kilometres long and of moderate difficulty. You can compare this route’s stated length with the range of circular trails. Check the conditions before setting out on a specific tour.

In Kastellaun, the Museum Haus der regionalen Geschichte traces the region’s development from the Middle Ages to the Cold War. The museum draws on themed exhibitions, information panels and original documents. From 25 April 2026, it will be open on Thursdays and Fridays from 12 noon to 5 pm, and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 11 am to 5 pm. Check the opening hours before your visit.

Regional specialities and Middle Rhine wines from high-quality vineyards are also among the attractions highlighted in the Rhine-Hunsrück region. You can use the interests that matter most to your trip to guide your search for accommodation.
