Discover Steinfeld: Cactus Land, Westwall and Cycle Routes
Accommodation in Steinfeld
Steinfeld brings together botanical discoveries, historic routes and a recurring festival tradition. At Cactus Land, cacti and succulents take centre stage, while information boards along the Steinfeld Westwall circular trail explain the area's history. Hiking and cycling routes offer further perspectives on the town; the nearby Bienwald adds a forest landscape to the picture. You can therefore plan your trip around what interests you most: plants, history, outdoor activities or a festival date.
Cactus Land on the edge of the forest
Kakteenland Steinfeld (Cactus Land Steinfeld) lies just outside the town, on the edge of the forest. There you can see more than 1,000 species of cactus and 600 other succulents. If you would like to learn more about the plants, you can choose a guided tour covering cacti, succulents and aloes. It lasts about 60 minutes and is for groups of 5 to 35 people. The tour brings the three plant groups together in a programme lasting about an hour.
Admission is free, and access is barrier-free. Check the current access conditions and the availability of guided tours before your trip. The nearest train and bus stops are about 1.5 kilometres away; factor this distance into your plans.
History, hiking trails and cycling routes
There are 24 information boards at 22 locations along the Steinfeld Westwall circular trail. They cover the Westwall as well as other historical events and periods. The loop passes through scenic parts of the municipality. The municipal association's hiking trail also runs through Steinfeld.
You can start the BienwaldmĂĽhle circular trail at Steinfeld railway station. It passes Cactus Land and the swimming complex before leading into Steinfeld. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The present-day swimming complex opened in May 1982.
For cycling, the 139-kilometre Kraut und RĂĽbenweg runs through Steinfeld. The German-French Pamina Lautertal Cycle Route is also not far from the town. It is 57 kilometres long, of which 18 kilometres are in France. This gives you a choice of different types of route: a long-distance cycle route through Steinfeld or a nearby regional route with a cross-border section.
Festival tradition and local history
Steinfeld holds its traditional Blueberry Festival every year on the first weekend in July. The festival includes the crowning of a Blueberry Princess. If you would like to visit for the occasion, check the exact dates and programme for that year.
The church also connects the town with its earlier history: St. Leodegar is the patron saint of Steinfeld's church, which is believed to have been named in the 7th or 8th century.
Steinfeld and the Southern Wine Route
As a wider regional setting, the Southern Wine Route has its own distinctive landscape: gently rolling vineyards and the open landscapes of the Rhine plain. It borders the Palatinate Forest Nature Park Biosphere Reserve and has a dense network of hiking and cycling trails. This regional setting extends beyond the individual routes that pass through Steinfeld. If your trip is to include more than the town itself, these landscapes and trail networks can provide additional ideas for planning.
The nearby Bienwald, with its mixed woodland and flat trails, offers a different kind of natural landscape. When looking for accommodation in Steinfeld, you can use your planned excursions as a guide: Cactus Land on the edge of the forest, hiking trails through the town or a cycling leg. Steinfeld railway station is connected to the Weißenburg–Winden railway line; check connections and timetables before your trip.
