Schillingen combines extensive woodland with a premium hiking trail and distinctive reminders of local history. Around 60 percent of the municipal area is forested; the village is also located in Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. If you would like to combine nature and history, you will find both a hiking trail and historic buildings and memorial sites here.

Forest, Water and the Panoramic Trail

The Schillingen Panoramic Trail is a premium hiking trail. The route starts and ends at the Schillingen Recreation Centre, where there is a large car park. Along the way, it passes Keller See, the Flonterbach and the Schillinger Waldweiher. Benches and loungers are placed along the route. The Panoramic Trail also reaches the 13-hectare Keller Reservoir. It is considered a recreation and holiday area. The start and finish at the Recreation Centre give your day a clear point of reference, while the bodies of water and places to sit shape the character of the route.

Schillingen is also home to the Fleschfelsen natural monument. If spending time outdoors is an important part of your trip, you can take in both the Panoramic Trail and a named natural monument. The trail itself links several bodies of water with places to rest along the way.

Churches and Traces of Local History

Sankt Albanus is one of the oldest buildings in the region. Its bell tower dates from the 12th century. The church and rectory stand on the walled grounds of a former castle. Sankt Albanus is a neoclassical successor building with six bays. Different architectural influences thus come together at this site.

In front of the church is a memorial stele to Jewish victims, alongside memorial plaques for the victims of both world wars. The Fatima Chapel also tells part of the village’s more recent history: a stone chapel was built after the Second World War and consecrated on 14 May 1951. The chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima and is a place of pilgrimage.

Another detail can be found on a house façade: a triangular sandstone block, originating from a pagan grave find, is visible on the Geisen House in Trierer Straße. Details like these complement the view of the churches and make local history visible on a residential building, too.
