Mauel in the Prüm Valley: Trails and Traces of Monuments
Accommodation in Mauel
Mauel in the Prüm Valley combines a circular trail with tangible traces of architectural history. On the Islek Pfädchen, the rock face, Mauel Mill and the Prüm appear in a clear sequence; in and around the village, there is also a historic district, two Streckhöfe (linear farmsteads), a historic portal and a cross on a shaft. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay more on the trail through the landscape or on architectural details.
The Prüm Valley and Traces of Monuments
West of Mauel, the Urmauel area lies on a terrace in the Prüm Valley and is designated as a historic district. The district includes two Streckhöfe (linear farmsteads). This brings the landscape setting and historic farm structure into view together.
At Dorfstraße 31, there is a former house entrance with a Baroque skylight portal dating from 1795. North of Mauel, on the road to Waxweiler, stands a tall post-Baroque cross on a shaft dating from 1847. The portal and the cross on a shaft are two tangible details of local architectural history, from different periods.
Circular Trails and Landscape
The Islek Pfädchen circular trail first follows a rock face above the Prüm to Mauel Mill, then returns through Mauel in the Prüm Valley. At the mill, the trail crosses the Prüm; on the way back, it offers views of the wooded slopes along the river. The Islek Pfädchen – Dierbach Valley near Mauel is an easy circular trail along the Dierbach, with natural vegetation and a secluded setting.
The first section of the Islek Pfädchen also follows the Willibrordusweg and Hiking Trail No. 21 in the South Eifel Nature Park. A section of the Islek Pfädchen trail in the Dierbach Valley follows the Devon Trail route in the NaturWanderPark delux. In each case, these trail connections apply to specific sections.
Another trail option is the Dierbach Valley Trail, which leads from the bridge near Mauel into the Dierbach Valley. The route is a helpful point of distinction when choosing a trail: the Islek Pfädchen connects the rock face, mill, crossing of the Prüm and return through Mauel; the Dierbach Valley Trail leads from the bridge into the valley.
Breaks and Getting There
There are picnic spots at Mauel Mill and at the starting point on the Prüm. Check local conditions before your trip. Parking is available right at the starting point in the hikers’ car park at the bridge before Mauel; check availability before you arrive.
