Darscheid brings together an iron-rich spring, trails through the Alfbach Valley and cultural events at the Kabau Theater Tent. If you would like to include outdoor activities, nature and an evening of culture in your travel plans, you will find a range of options here. From Darscheid, you can also explore nearby maars, cross Eifel forests on foot or by bike, and take day trips to the NĂĽrburgring and the towns of Daun and Gerolstein.

The Darscheid Drees: a special spring

The Darscheid Drees is considered the most iron-rich spring in the Volcanic Eifel; its iron content is stated as 46 milligrams per litre. It is also considered a weakly mineralised, carbonated spring with an extremely high iron content. The spring’s long history of use is part of its story, too: its bubbling water has long been used to fill jugs.

Directions to the Drees lead via the Daun exit on the A1 and the L91 towards Darscheid. There is a car park behind the sports ground. If you would like to combine your visit with a walk or other destinations, you can include the spring as a separate stop in your day’s itinerary.

Hiking trails and nature around Darscheid

The Path of Biodiversity is a circular educational trail around Darscheid, where you can discover a variety of habitats. It is 13.5 kilometres long and climbs 218 metres. Its length and elevation gain provide a concrete guide when deciding how much hiking to fit into your day.

The Lewaldroute also leads from the village centre through the Alfbach Valley and past large trees. The same applies to the Path of Biodiversity: both trails run from the village centre through this area. For cycling, the Maare-Moselle Cycle Route and the Volcano Cycle Route are close to Darscheid. This lets you choose between local hiking trails and nearby cycle routes when planning, without treating the two types of tour as the same.

Church and events

The present-day Church of the Holy Cross was built between 1969 and 1971. Its architecture includes a free-standing pyramid-shaped tower, above which a golden angel hovers at a height of 25 metres. The separate tower and the figure above it make the church a striking architectural landmark in the village.

The Kabau Theater Tent hosts music and theatre events, readings and parties. It has around 300 seats arranged in rising rows. The events on offer depend on the programme, so check the dates if you would like to plan an evening of culture.

More things to do in the Volcanic Eifel

The Volcanic Eifel also offers a distinctive geological perspective: 77 maars have been identified there to date. In addition, 350 eruption centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel took place at Ulmen Maar around 10,900 years ago.

The Volcanic Eifel Trails offer half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. They lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig and are marked and signposted. One specific option is the 26.2-kilometre Vulcano Trail, a circular route east of Schalkenmehren. For mountain biking, the Volcanic Eifel Trail Park has a network of around 750 kilometres of trails with more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain. The different route formats help you choose hiking or cycling stages to suit the amount of time you would like to spend.
