Immerath is part of the “Around Pulvermaar” holiday region. The village combines a distinctive maar landscape with hiking trails and historic sites. This lets you include nature, outdoor activities and local history in your trip planning.

The Immerath Maar and its landscape

The Immerath Maar is a lake with no inflow. Its water is fed by precipitation, surface water and groundwater. The maar formed around 40,000 to 70,000 years ago. Covering 66 hectares, the area includes shoreline, fen and meadow habitats that provide refuge for plants and animals. Rare birds, frogs, dragonflies and butterflies live in the maar area. As stop 21 on the German Volcano Road, the Immerath Maar is also part of a long-distance route.

There are clear rules for visitors: swimming and other water sports are prohibited in the nature reserve at the maar. Fishing at the Immerath Maar is permitted with a fishing licence. A nearby shelter at the maar offers refuge in bad weather.

Hiking and sensory stations

The Wendelinus hiking trail is about twelve kilometres long and forms a circular route around Immerath, with several viewpoints along the way. It follows historic mill paths through Eifel forests and, in sections, along the Üßbach stream. The route therefore combines scenic views with glimpses of a landscape shaped by old mill paths.

Another way to discover the area is the Path of the Senses, with 15 sensory stations in and around Immerath. The circular route and the sensory trail offer different experiences: one focuses on a longer hike with viewpoints, while the other invites you to explore your senses at individual stations. You can decide which option best suits your day based on your interests.

Chapel, school museum and village traditions

The Chapel of the Holy Trinity is Immerath’s landmark and offers a view over the village in the maar basin. A procession by the village community, accompanied by music, follows a stone Way of the Cross to the chapel. The route thus links a local tradition with a prominent destination in the village.

The village’s school history is also still present: the former school and bakehouse houses a school museum and two working ovens. The museum is in a historic half-timbered building dating from around 1770, which served as a school until 1910. In Immerath, explorations of the landscape sit alongside reminders of village life in the past.

Immerath’s character is shaped in part by the absence of through traffic. The nearby maar, hiking trails and historic sites offer a range of ideas for planning your day, without requiring you to focus your stay on a single activity.

Choose accommodation to suit your interests

If you are looking for accommodation in Immerath, the kind of days you want to spend can help guide your choice: Would you like to walk the roughly twelve-kilometre circular route, focus on the maar landscape, or explore the chapel and school museum? These interests can help you plan your trip around the experiences that appeal to you most.

The Vulkaneifel on a broader scale

The wider Vulkaneifel destination offers a geological perspective that extends beyond the Immerath Maar. So far, 77 maars have been identified and 350 eruption centres counted in the Vulkaneifel, about 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago.

The Vulkaneifel’s hiking options also offer a different scale from the route around Immerath: the Vulkaneifel trails lead to scenic highlights on either side of the Eifelsteig. They are marked and signposted, and include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. This lets you choose between a specific local circular route and hikes of varying lengths across the wider destination.
