Dockweiler lies in the Volcanic Eifel, among hills, meadows and forests, and also within the spring and catchment areas of many Eifel rivers. Water, basalt and built heritage give you several concrete starting points for planning your trip.

Springs, Basalt and Trails

At the Borren, water flows over three large basalt blocks associated with Dockweiler’s location on a lava flow. At the Dockweiler Drees, iron-rich deposits reflect the high iron content typical of spring water in the Volcanic Eifel. The two places show different aspects of the local connection between water and geology.

A log cabin at the Dockweiler Drees offers shelter to hikers and nature lovers. The Mosel-Erft-Lieser hiking trail passes directly by the Drees. As of June 23, 2026, the water there is not suitable for drinking. Check its current status before drinking spring water.

Cyclists will also find a specific route connection: the Mineral Springs Cycle Route climbs from Ahrdorf towards the spring area near Dockweiler, then continues to Daun. Check the route details before setting out.

Local History and Tradition

St. Laurentius probably began as a hall church in the 11th century and was expanded into a basilica towards the end of the 12th century. Dockweiler’s former railway station is a standard design dating from the early 20th century. Both buildings represent different periods in the town’s history.

A cross-shaped house at Gerolsteiner Straße 5 features Neoclassical motifs and is dated 1856. The plastered building at Hauptstraße 24 was probably a former rectory from the mid-19th century. These two addresses add 19th-century architectural heritage to the story of the town’s religious history.

The mountain chapel on Mühlenberg was built in 1949/50 at the boundary of Dockweiler, Dreis and Betteldorf as a shared chapel of thanksgiving. It commemorates the parish’s protection from major war damage. Dockweiler’s Kirmes is the parish fair in honor of St. Laurentius. It takes place on the first Sunday after August 10, around the Pfarrer-Hubert-Schmitz-Haus. If you plan your visit around the event, check the specific program before travelling.

Food and Travel Planning

The Knusperhäuschen is described as a café and bistro, as well as a branch of the Utters bakery in Dockweiler. If you plan to visit, check before travelling whether it is currently open.

For rail travel, go via Gerolstein station on the Trier–Cologne Eifel Railway; from there, continue on a 12-kilometre bus or taxi journey. By car, take the A48/A1 to the Vulkaneifel interchange, then continue via Daun and the B421 to Dockweiler. Check public transport connections before travelling; road conditions and detours may change.

The Volcanic Eifel as a Wider Region

A total of 77 maars have been recorded in the wider Volcanic Eifel travel region. Another 350 eruption centres have been counted there, about 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago.

The regional hiking options also vary in duration: the marked and signposted Volcanic Eifel trails lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig and offer half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long.

For a closer look at volcanism, the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Strohn Volcano House is an interactive museum featuring a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, about six metres long and four metres high. These places complement Dockweiler’s connections to springs and basalt with further themes from the Volcanic Eifel.
