Feusdorf: Hiking Trails, Village History and Wide Views
Accommodation in Feusdorf
Feusdorf combines village history with hiking trails that range from wide forest paths to open landscapes. Along the way, you’ll encounter a variety of views and distinctive natural features; in the village, the chapel, fountain and church recall the local history. You can plan your stay around your preferred focus: a hiking break with varied landscapes or additional discoveries in the Vulkaneifel.
Hiking trails with varied landscapes
Hiking trail F2 is a 6.4-kilometre hike along wide forest paths. One section runs beside the Bisselbach stream. From the highest point near Esch, the view reaches Hohe Acht and Aremberg; NĂĽrburg and Ernstberg are also visible at the beginning and end of the route. Long-distance views depend on visibility. Check local trail conditions before setting out, as route details may change.
Hiking trail F4 is a 7.2-kilometre route around Feusdorf through predominantly open countryside. It offers wide views of the Eifel and towards Feusdorf. At 0.8 kilometres longer than F2, the two trails also differ in their landscape character: F2 follows wide forest paths and runs beside the Bisselbach stream, while F4 crosses mostly open terrain. The route lengths provide a practical guide for planning your day, without indicating how long each hike will take.
Hiking trail F5 starts and ends at the car park by the community centre in Feusdorf. Parking regulations may change, so check them on site. The trail passes Hippelsteinchen, a geological formation near juniper heaths. F5 also passes a nature reserve near Gönnersdorf, fields and the rural surroundings of Feusdorf. A viewpoint is located below Auf dem Langen. This route therefore combines geological features with open landscape views.
Village history along the way
Above Feusdorf, on Auf den Aachen, stands the little Marian chapel, built in 1992. The village fountain was created in 2003 on the original site of the former village well (Dorfpütz). In the church in Feusdorf, a cast-iron grave cross from the 15th century is located in the vestibule. Together, these places illustrate different aspects of the village’s history, from the former well site to a historic detail in the church.
Nature is also part of the surroundings: the area Im Hirtenberg near Feusdorf is designated as a nature reserve and listed by the Nature and Geopark Vulkaneifel. The name refers to a protected area; local hiking descriptions also provide practical information about the landscape and routes.
The Vulkaneifel in a regional context
The Vulkaneifel is a distinct region with a pronounced volcanic history. To date, 77 maars have been identified there and 350 eruption centres counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. Ulmener Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. These regional figures and connections complement the local trails and sights in Feusdorf; they do not describe them.
The hiking options in the Vulkaneifel also cover a wider area: the Vulkaneifel trails lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig. They are marked and signposted and include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. For geological topics, the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Vulkanhaus Strohn is an interactive museum with a lava fissure wall about 30,000 years old, measuring around six metres long and four metres high.
