Water, hiking trails and a distinctive piece of architectural history give Kerschenbach a varied character. The local water recreation area is located where the Kalkerbach and Dürenbach streams meet. It offers step-free access to the stream, a shelter beside the hiking trails and opportunities for children to explore the water. Nature by the stream is just as much a part of the experience as the trails through the surrounding area.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The Kerschenbach KB1 circular hiking trail is considered family-friendly; according to its description, it is signposted throughout in accordance with the criteria of the German Hiking Association. It reaches the confluence of the Kalkerbach and Dürrbach streams, which form the Kerschenbach. An information point focuses on the history of the Kerschenbach Mill. The route thus combines a close-up look at the local waterways with a historical subject.

The Kerschenbach KB2 forest experience trail has a different focus: it is moderately difficult, 8.1 kilometres long and involves 120 metres of ascent and descent each. Along the route, the trail follows the Kalkerbach and crosses the Dürbach. An XXL bench installed in 2023 offers views over the landscape around Kerschenbach and the neighbouring holiday village. A section of about 400 metres runs alongside or on the K64 district road. Take care of traffic there and check the road conditions and signs on site.

KB3 also offers a perspective of its own: from the route, you can see Lake Kronenburg and historic Kronenburg, with its rows of medieval houses. The trails therefore differ not only in their route details, but also in the impressions they highlight: the mill information point on KB1, the specified route profile of KB2, or the views of the lake and historic houses on KB3.

St. Lucia Chapel: architectural history in detail

The St. Lucia Chapel is a striking cultural highlight. The rendered rubble-stone building has a late Gothic choir dating from the 16th century and a nave with two bays from 1681. Its interior features Baroque altar figures and a Pietà. The four Evangelists are depicted in the star-shaped vaulted ceiling. The chapel thus brings together different details of architectural and art history in a compact building.

In the wider Vulkaneifel destination

Kerschenbach is part of the wider Vulkaneifel travel destination. So far, 77 maars have been documented there and 350 volcanic centres counted; around 270 of these are from the more recent phase. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which took place about 10,900 years ago. These regional geological facts form a broader subject in their own right, separate from the local hiking and water experiences in Kerschenbach.

The hiking options on the Vulkaneifel Trails should also be viewed in a regional context: they include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes; the trails are marked and signposted. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between the specific route profiles in Kerschenbach and a broader focus on hiking in the wider destination.
