Kadenbach between history and nature
Accommodation in Kadenbach
Kadenbach combines a long history with a hands-on experience of nature: its story reaches back to the Middle Ages, while the Binnbachtal Nature Trail follows a circular route through a valley between Kadenbach and Eitelborn. Information boards accompany visitors along the trail. This gives you two distinct interests to consider when planning your trip: historical context and time in nature. You can think about which focus suits your stay as early as when you search for accommodation.
Kadenbach’s history and the Binnbachtal trail
Kadenbach was first mentioned in a document in 1110. In 1216, the village was transferred to the Teutonic Order along with St. Florin’s Hospital; Kadenbach remained associated with the Koblenz Teutonic Order House until 1809. This historical legacy is reflected in the village coat of arms. The Maria in der Augst chapel is also associated with Kadenbach; it was completed in 2000. Alongside its medieval history, the village therefore has a more recent chapel with its own date in time.
The Binnbachtal Nature Trail offers a different focus. The approximately 2.5-kilometre route is a circular trail in an idyllic valley between Kadenbach and Eitelborn. Information boards are part of the trail, as is the nature experience; the route is recommended for families with children. Its approximate length and circular layout give you specific points of reference when weighing nature and local history as different parts of your trip.
Culture, geological history and hiking trails in the Westerwald
The wider Westerwald destination offers everything from brewing culture and museums to long-distance hiking trails and distinctive landscapes. The Hachenburg Adventure Brewery offers beer experience tours and brewing courses; individual appointments can be arranged by phone. Check the brewery directly for current booking arrangements. In Hachenburg, restored half-timbered houses around the Old Market Square shape the historic town centre; the Lion Fountain is also part of its historic atmosphere.
The Westerwald Ceramics Museum explores the history of working with clay. The objects on display usually originate in a Westerwald clay pit. In a well-equipped museum workshop, visitors can get creative themselves under expert guidance; check the workshop programme and booking conditions before your trip. The TERTIÄRUM at Stöffel Park offers a different perspective on geological history: it displays fossils, including the famous “Stöffel Mouse,” which document around 25 million years of Earth’s history. Stöffel Park itself is a former basalt quarry covering around 140 hectares, combining industrial culture, geological history and nature.
The hiking trails also differ considerably in scale. The WesterwaldSteig runs for 235 kilometres through the Westerwald and is divided into 16 stages; it is worth consulting the current route planner before setting out. The Druidensteig runs for 94 kilometres, with seven day stages through seven river valleys and more than 30 geo-information points. These long-distance trails offer a different scale from the approximately 2.5-kilometre circular route in the Binnbachtal: their stages and routes require separate planning for longer hikes.
The wider region also offers contrasting landscapes, including the Westerwald Lake District, a natural area with seven ponds, and the Holzbach Gorge, which is about one kilometre long and has basalt walls up to 30 metres high. At 657 metres, the Fuchskaute is the highest elevation in the Westerwald. The wider Westerwald destination thus brings together bodies of water, a basalt breakthrough valley and a prominent peak, alongside cultural and geological attractions.
Plan your stay around your interests
When looking for accommodation in Kadenbach, you can use your interests as a first filter: would you like your stay to focus mainly on the village’s history and the Binnbachtal trail, or would you also like to include destinations across the wider Westerwald? This helps you distinguish between local attractions and regional offerings. If longer hiking trails are part of your plans, their stages and current route information provide a concrete framework for organising your trip.
