Oberelbert is in Nassau Nature Park and is best explored along its trails: an extensive network of hiking and walking paths leads through forests, meadows and fields. This means a variety of landscapes can be found side by side in the surrounding area; at the same time, individual viewpoints, rest areas and trail destinations provide specific stopping points for an outing. When planning, it is worth considering what kind of day you have in mind: a longer tour with published route details, or an outing shaped by its individual waypoints.

The species-rich grasslands around Oberelbert are considered a habitat for many day-flying butterflies, including light and dark forms of the dusky large blue butterfly. These two forms also make the meadows a specific focus for nature watching, adding a distinctive natural feature to the impression created by the forest and fields.

Hiking Between the Stelzenbach Valley and the Forest Window

A longer hike can be planned around the Wäller Tour Elberthöhen. It is rated moderate. The route is 15.8 kilometres long, with 285 metres of ascent and descent, and takes five hours. It runs from Niederelbert through Welschneudorf and Oberelbert; a short spur leads into the village. There are numerous rest areas along the route. The trail passes the Forellenhof and continues through the Stelzenbach Valley into the forest. The distance, elevation gain and estimated time give you a specific framework for planning your day; rest areas and trail destinations offer further points of reference.

The Apfelstein Route leads through the protected Stelzenbach meadows and past the Erbenmühle mill. One notable stop is the Waldfenster area: carved sculptures, benches, a forest window and a tree telephone are all part of a rest stop there. This route therefore combines protected meadows with a designed stopping point along the way. Free parking is available at the starting point at the Stelzenbachhalle. If you are arriving by car, you can take this starting point into account when planning your trip.

Another destination along the way is the Maria-Hilf shrine below the Rötchen high point. In good weather, the view from there reaches as far as the Taunus. The fishponds beyond Oberelbert also offer a waterside rest stop. Together with the rest areas along the Wäller Tour, such specific places give you different points of reference for planning an outing—from a viewpoint to a break by the water.

Small Traces of Local Culture Along the Way

At the edge of Untershausen, a small wayside shrine stands on the old church path from Oberelbert to Holler. Its mosaic Madonna faces St. Margaret’s Church in Holler. The shrine likely dates from the time when Oberelbert belonged to the parish of Holler. This possible historical context adds a glimpse into the area’s church history to its natural features.

If you are looking for accommodation for a stay that includes hiking, you can use your day plans to help narrow down your options: the Wäller Tour offers specific route and time details, while the protected meadows and Waldfenster rest stop are key features of the Apfelstein Route. Consider whether you would rather base your choice on route details or on natural and cultural points of interest.
